Help 85 Wagon Wont Idle

Hi, I have an 85 Wagon that wont Idle with the MAF Connected, but idles fine with it disconnected. I checked the ECU and all i get is a code 44. I just got the car a week ago, it was sitting in someones yard for a year. I pulled the MAF out of the car and checked that it glows for a sec after the car is shut off. also if I have the MAF connected (but removed from air flow) and blow a little air (less then I would use to blow out a candle) into the MAF the car stalls. I also checked the Air regulator and it has 12 volts and it reads 75 ohms across the 2 terminals.

Any suggestions?

Thank you
Lee

do you have some major air leak after the maf? Between the MAF and TB...thats the only think of assuming the MAF is functional. When the MAF is plugged in it is reading the metered air, but if you have a huge leak that is coming in after the meter then that could cause the car to die...just an idea...without the maf plugged in the car should not run much higher than idle something like 2K max, good luck.

Correct,

If I have the MAF Connect and metering the air going into the the TB the car won't idle. if I remove the MAF and its not metering the air, but it is still connected in circuit. then the car idles. If at that point I blow a little air into the MAF. the car will stall. also the car is running very rich or lean. I dont know the difference. but the exhaust smells bad. I also cleaned the TB. That didnt help. I dont know what to do from here.

Thanks

you can check if you are running rich or lean with the ecu. Also if you hit the gas and you are getting black smoke then you are rich, also bad gas mileage will result. You can also pull your plugs to see if you are running rich or lean...but it sounds like you are rich. Have you looked for an air leak past the MAF? If you cat is bad that will make it smell kinda metallic, or like rotton eggs....which is a posibility since the car was sitting for so long. Also have you tried another MAF? Is there anyone in your area that you could borrow a MAF from just to rule that out.

How can I tell if I am running rich or lean with the ecu? I did check the ecu for an error and I got a code 44. I did check one of the plugs last night and it was black. so I belive I am running rich. but then again..... I was playing around with the car and I found that if I restrict the air flow to the MAF the car idles and Revs nice. I put the the air filter and cover back on and it wont idles and runs sluggish again. I took the air cover back off and put my hand over the MAF and reduce the air flow and it idles and runs great when I rev the engine and the smell is gone. I take my hand away from the MAF and it stalls and runs sluggish. Could it be that someone put in the wrong MAF?

Thank you for all your help.

If you want to see if the car is running rich or lean look at your exhaust. If its dark colored then its rich. If its white then its lean.

Cardana's right you should find another MAF and test it. See how your car runs with that. Also check to see if there is vaccum at the EGR valve at idle. That may have something to do with it. But since your car runs okay without the MAF then probably wont be the problem.

Does the car make any noises it did make before?
Also the cat can clog the exhaust so you might have that checked too.
