WEIRD tranmissions behavior just now

I was goin down I-80 and wanted to see how the car would react if i "shifted" down to third, as opposed to just mashing the gas. so i did, the car accelerated nicely, and once i got up to about 90 or so, from 70, i slapped the shifter back over to 4th(D). then a few seconds later, i realized the RPMS still seemed to high...and i looked at the dash indicator, and 3 was still lit up so i proceeded to drive like that, making sure i wasnt in 4th by hitting the gas...and the car didnt downshift, it just accelerated, like i was already in 3, which i guess it was. so i started to back off the gas a few times to see if it would shift...nothing. i exited the highway back onto surface streets, and it stayed in 3, 3 stayed lit up.

fast forward, i have to make a U turn in a parking lot cuz i missed my friends street cuz i was worried about this damn thing. so i swing the u turn, but since we have the turning radius of a cargo ship, i had to make a K turn...when i put the car R, 3 stayed lit up and R didnt! then i drove to my friends, parked the car and left it running...P lit up, with 3 lit up as well...when backing up down his street, R wasnt lit up, and it SEEMED, althought i couldnt really tell thru my tint, but i was pretty damn sure my reverse lights were NOT on.

fast forward again, im on the main road leading to my house, and just outta curiosity, with 3 still lit up (mind you, the shifter is in D this whole time 3 is lit up), i slap the shifter to 3, and i feel the car downshift! slap back to D, and it upshifts AND it lights up.

what the hell was goin on!?

it could be worse, but it certainly could be a lot better.

haha, but more to the point, u think it was a bad startup, or the ECU just glitched?

sounds like a ECU fart. reboot.

and our turning radius sucks....unless you're used to driving a delivery truck.

99% of the people on the fourm here will agree that the radius on a 2k-2k3 maximas with 17" suck ballz. Its 40 feet i think instead of 35 feet with the 15" or 16".

I've driven a variety of cars, all with better turning radii. I dont believe that edmund's numbers lie, and the radius for the Max is literally the biggest I've seen on there. Fact is, the Maxima should not have a turning radius worse than a lot of SUV's, and it does.

But really, the turing radius is not a reason to dislike a car, just that it got mentioned in this thread.

yeah, the i just kinda threw that in, it didnt really matter, haha.

back to the point tho, while driving down my street yesterday i did the same thing, smacked the car into 3rd...back to D, and it stayed on 3. im gonna reset the ECU (the right way, the TS way) and see if that corrects it, if not, i need to go to Nissan for my oil change (free) anyway, so ill have them look at it.

OT - The turning radius of the maxima SUCKS BALLZ

it reminds me of my ancient 90 ford aerostar.

I am driving a 2005 Mercury Grandmarquis, and that thing has a WAY better turning radius than maximas. In fact all the other cars I drove, the maxima was the absolute worst turning radius.

yup its definitely those big 17s making such a big turning radius. sometimes i wish i had smaller rims, but that soon changes when i step outside and look at the car. it takes some getting used to, but once you learn to master the 5 pt turn it isnt that bad!

The limitation isnt because of the rim size.

Nissan put stoppers in, from what I understand on the steering rack that prevents you from steering too much with the 17" rims.

If you switch to 15's or 16's makes no difference.

Do GXEs have stoppers as well? Since they were the only ones to come with the 16" rims after 2002

The turning radius stuff is a mad

Anyways, I'm not sure what's wrong with your tranny, but aren't you not supposed to be shifting an auto while you're moving anyway? And I would think esp not at highway speeds.... I dunno but ya might have jacked something up cuz of that... but what do I know about autos?

Good luck getting it fixed at the dealer$hip....

I don't think it hurts too much to shift from 3 to D, as it just adds a 4th gear for highway cruising, but I wouldn't do it much.

I would definitely take it into a dealer asap, the tranny might be slipping and not going into the right gear?

well, i mean either way, its under warranty. it is ok to downshift like that, cuz i mean, if you were cruising in D (4) and hit the gas, it would shift down to third itself, i was just doing it on my own. but i think i will go to my dealer soon, when its oil change time, and have them check it out.
