problem with my car...

well i was driving along tonight and I didnt have my gauges in because i was doing reverse indiglo gauges on them so the dimmer and everything was disconnected. All of a sudden my radio went out and the my clock slowly faded and then finally went out. The car then sort of bucked but then went back to normal. The auto started shifting hard and then further down the road power went out and everything just sort of shut down. so i was on the side of the road and then i called someone and got it jumped. Put my gauges back in and the everything started ok. I drove home with no problems at all. Im not exactly sure what the problem is... did the battery just crap out or did me driving the car without the gauges in it do something to the electrical system? I also have a check engine light on now too. anyone know what went wrong here???

that sounds kinda weird. the fading clock and everything shutting down are usually signs of a dying battery or alternator problem but if it seems to be OK now I wouldn't worry about it. Like you said, maybe having the gauges out while driving confused the computer. If your SES light is still on I would get the codes pulled at Autozone to see what the problem is. Typically a battery or alternator problem would cause the battery light to come on and not the SES.

you may want to check all your fuses in the compartment under the dash and in the engine bay. just an idea...
