Show me pictures of your aftermarket HU install!!!

Hey guys,

I've been going back and forth for a while about whether to go aftermarket with my HU and to just change the entire system, or to try to keep the stock HU (for the sleeper/smoother look) and to attempt to match a new amp and speakers adapt to the stock HU. I have the NON-Bose HU in my car.

So now I've realized that an aftermarket HU will over tons more options for adjusting the sound just the way I want it, plus mp3 playability, etc., etc. The only thing that still concerns me about it is the appearance. I feel that the Max is one of the cars that you don't want to change the HU in b/c it will screw with the overall look of the dashboard significantly..and for the worse.

So those of you who have an aftermarket HU, could you post some close-up pics of that area of your dash?

And which kit gives the smoothest/best look with an aftermarket HU? Should I get the GXE one from Nissan or the adjustable one that SoundDomain sells (or one of the other options)?

Thanks for any help,
Brian

I got a Kenwwod KDC-X879 installed in the dash. I have to admit that one of the main reasons why I got it was because the blue and red lights on the head unit match the blue and red lights on my dash. Not to mention the fact that when you turn off the vehicle, the faceplate flips over to show a blank black panel. Kinda cool! Performance is pretty solid too. Quite possibly the best deck I've had for the price.

You'd have better luck in the Car Audio forum.

I got this headunit to repleace my crappy AM/FM Tape player that came stock with my car. GXE 5spds didn't have the fancy CD and tape HU, and they also lack the Apillar tweets. I bought my GXE with intention of fully revamping its look, performance, handling and sound, so extra dough on a SE was just pointless. I'm moving up to a better head unit someday, this one is 3 years old now, I got a MP3 changer in the trunk holds 6 disks, and I also have the XM unit- all Alpine baby. I have diff subs now, JLs wheren't good for the music I like.

BlackBIRDVQ - Which install kit is that you used with your Alpine? It's a real nice finish.

(btw-coincidence, I used to have that same exact model in my old car)

If I am not mistaken it a stock GXE OEM pocket and a A/C Vent trim.

I just got rid of that radio and still have a 6 cd changer and Siruis module left. Are you interested in either or?

my ride is a GXE... so I have a GXE center dash vent cover. Its OEM, and you can order it from Nissan. It comes with the vents and the trim around the radio. I am not sure if the pocket below the radio comes with it or not. If not then you need the pocket plus diff radio brackets for a GXE. Its nice to own the cheapest Maxima sometimes I got a Leather steering wheel off a 02 SE that I'm riggn up tomorrow, my plastic rubber wheel ( mine had no leather on the wheel ) is worn out pretty bad after 100K miles. I can't wait to feel the real deal ! My 93 SE-R and my G20 have leather wheels, my Max don't. At this point it would be hard for anyone to tell my car is not a SE.

i used nothing else except the cd player. When i removed the origanal tape deck it was screwed in the side. My cd player had holes for the screws as well so i just screwed in the sides and put it back just as if the tape player was still there. Nothing added, nothing removed. Very simple. Quite possibly easiest install.

btw...i am selling this cd player in the for sale section. or e-mail me cloud_556@hotmail.com

Thanks for the offer, but I finished my sounds 2 days after I bought my car. I promised myself that I wouldn't spend more money on my stereo. Performance stuff......that's another story. Do you miss your JIC's? What suspension set-up are you running now?

no, we don't. You need to buy the PAC adapter for the vol/track buttons. however, you can still retain the trip/gas/time.

Okay, so what's the best and cheapest place to get the GXE kit, and will it come with EVERYTHING I need, including pocket?

Thanks,
Brian

It seems like you guys with monitors have them install in the upper DIN chassis. Is there a reason why you did this, it seems out of place and blocks the air vents? Can you install monitors in the bottom DIN location?

you probably can but then when the screen is up it will block the top slot which is where you may have another HU.

Oh, that's fine. I will only have one HU and I want it in the bottom slot so it only covers the smallest amount of the vents.

No, it's not an EQ. Actually, it's a CD add on unit with different analyzer displays. Yeah, it looks like an EQ unit but it's not. I can switch between the two CD's (one in the headunit and one in the add-on unit).
