I went to the Nissan service shop today and they think the woofer is the problem. After testing the system to the heavy bass of Jill Scott they decided it was the woofer, not the deck as I concluded. There were three techs in the inspecting the vehicle, one outside, one in the trunk, and one in the rear seat. The seat belt housings were also eliminated as a possibility. I will post the final outcome.

In addition see Mdeal's post on this subject if you have not already. It's a great fix! http://www.fourthrock.com/maxima/mods.html

I had the dealer local to me check out that rattling and he just shrugged it off. He said "there's nothing I can do about it, nothing's loose and I can't add any padding."

I'll be interested in how yours turns out.

Do you have an outcome?

I was just messing around last night with the rear parcel (the carpeted thing). I noticed if I place my hand on the parcel itself, the vibration stops. This would tell me it is not the woofer. I had the woofer cover off and the rear seats folded down. With that said, this leaves the seat belt retractor things, something underneath, or the rear parcel itself.

I have not disassembled the rear area to officially try to figure it out: I was making preliminary judgements and looking for direction.

A while back there was a thread about this, his solution was to stick a towel or something similar under there to brace it and keep it pushed up to eliminate movement, I personaly plan on using foam or rubber padding when it get warm enough to work on the car. You can tell it's the rear parcel which is making the noise by splapping it with your hand, you get the same sound, which also shows that the noise happens when the panel moves down so if you brace it from underneath it should fix the problem.

I've taken off the grille/cover for the sub and inspected the area thoroughly, it's both! I was surprised that the sub doing so but the problem is still moslty due to the deck (in my car at least). It also depends on the music and the kind of bass (most cars have a tendency to resonate severly at about 100Hz). I wonder how Dynamat will help the problem.

I'm anxious to hear the outcome!

Guess it's a good thing that I don't have the Bose system. My basic system doesn't rattle at all. But then again it probably doesn't have the power to rattle. :-)

I thought about Dynomat, thus one of the reasons I was back there rootin' around. There are rubber spacers between the metal and the parcel itself. There also a cloth/material like sheet under there already, like what is under the hood. The rubber spacers provide rigidness so that the thing doesn't cave in (I think).

If nothing comes of this, I'm going to disassemble the whole thing and put some Dynomat down.

They will call me when the part (woofer) arrives at the shop. I will immediately post the results afterwards.

I took mine to the dealer as I stated, but if they can fix it on their first attempt beats me because I don't believe the problem is the woofer like they do, but they seem more than willing to find the trouble, so to answer your question to the point I would recommend that you take it to the dealer, first because it is still covered under the warranty and second you won't waist your time or effort trying to find a problem us Org. members have been stumped on for quite a while. The only hassle will be finding the time to take it to the dealer and the wait for the repair. Good Luck!

Anyone have pics they can post of their Maxima with the Bose system. Specifically I am looking to see the install of the subwoofer. Remember that bass will make the trunk rattle. In most any car it not all. I seen bass make the roofline of a civic hatchback warp up and down like a beating heart (with a 12w4 and SoundStream Ref. 500) and the effect was similar on a 2000 Grand Prix Gt with 2 12w3s and a SS Rub. 702, only it was the roof of the trunk (top).

True but even though lots of Org. members call it a sub, even though it is not. It is actually a woofer,(check the Bose site - www.bose.com) this is not to say it should not rattle from a woofer though. Sub are able to reproduce much lower frequencies some lower than the human ear can perceive.

menacer, my system when turned up makes my roofline flex up and down but i'm almost positive it is only because of my sunroof...the sunroof has a fairly large hole in the rear section of the car that it detracts into and that is the part that flexes

Well Annimax, I guess what you guys are talking about is something from inside the car that when the "system" is on you actually hear an undesirable "racket". What I thought you guys were taking about was the trunk rattling. Commonly heard when you step outside of your car. Anyone know that the source of the rattling is then. I was installing the cargo net and I remember teh org members posting there thoughts on this matter I tried to check it out but I haven't installed my system in my Maxima so I can only speculate that it's a thin rod that goes above along the roof of the trunk. Sorry guys, I would have to experience the problem. Let me know if you guys find a solution. One more thing, I was taking to an owner of a local stereo shop and he told me that you don't have to have Dynomat to get rid of rattles. Using silicon works as well.
