How does a stick 5.5 gen compare to a auto 5.5 ?

ok well i ALWaYS believed that a stick 6 speed 5.5 gen would be faster then me on the highway. i have a 5.5 gen auto,kit/rims/cai/drop. i was driving on the the cross island pkwy last night and spotted a dark blue 5.5 gen 6 speed dropped/chiped/cai/catback. we lined at 50 and both punched it instantaly i gained 1/2 a car on him and walked him all the way up to about 120ish and then shut it down. We pulled off the next exit and began to talk he was extremmly supried i had a auto and pulled on him, he had 19' axis rims and i had heavy 18' chrome so i dont think that woulve made a diffrence also we both had injen cai's, i jsut had the stillen kit and he didnt. so not much diffrece weight wise. so is the auto quicker on the highway ?

BTW i saw a black kitted out 5 gen tryin to keep up with us but after about 2 min i couldnt see you in my rearview anymore. anyone on here ??

it depends on the driver. Stick can either be a major advantage, or disadvantage.

If i guy just plain doesn't know what he's doing with shifting (during racing) he's definatly hurting his performance in comparison to an auto, which is just step and go.

I'd say the difference can be huge if u really got your skills honed and can shift quick and briskly, and the perfect and exact momment.

Peformance difference in almost every situation are similar, except with stick u get a very more accurate method of controlling the vehicle and it's output.

If you're downright flawless with a stick, you can nab at least .5 in your 1/4s over an auto. If you're pretty good at it, then it'd be closer to .3 or so.

In the hwy, the 6 speed should easily walk an auto b/c of the short gearing. At 50 he should have been in 3rd but its a bad speed to start for the stick since 3rd redlines around 90? but 2nd does so around 60ish? And you said someone couldn't keep up after 2 minutes? Does not take 2 minutes to get to those high speeds....maybe takes 20 seconds if that. 120 is still 4th gear on the 6 speed b/c I do it frequently.

on the dragstrip....a 5.5 auto isn't far behind a 5.5 6spd....thats if the 6spd launches well too....becuz its either u launch well, or u launch crappy (there is no inbetween)....

yes the 6spd is much trickier to launch than the auto....and also the auto can take advantage of the extra tq from the 3.5 to launch off the line very well...that is the reason why autos are not that far behind at the dragstrip....as Arnold K stated earlier....sometimes as low as .3 seconds behind only.....

but your thread seems like its on the highway.....from what i know, a 6spd should easily handle an auto 5.5.....the reason being is becuz.....autos 3rd gear is VERY long.....once it hits 3rd gear at around 80mph-ish, prepare for a very long gear and falling out of the powerband......

1. How'd you "spot" the chip, CAI, and cat-back? Was he driving on 2 wheels with his hood open?

2. He obviously didn't know what he was doing with his gears...

3. How'd ya know the black Max was trying to keep up with ya?

4. And like Celica said... did ya ever "kill" that SC300?

from a moving start a 6 speed with do nothing but PULL on any evenly equiped auto. The 6 speed actually PUTS OUT MORE HP (at the wheels) to begin with. Even if you guys had the same exact mods IF he knew how to drive a stick you would not have a chance. The better gearing alone would beat you and the stick has extra ponies at the wheel that should seal the deal.

yeah to compare i drove a 00 auto max, same miles as my 5spd 00, the diffrence was night and day, for one the autos gearing was higher, for two, it felt less powerful

a 6spd should have a good .1-.2 advantage over an auto 5.5 gen, IMHO

street racing is bad, ive done it, im calming with it, i tend to find deserted areas that are barely public roads if a buddy of mine wants to do it now a days

smaller wheel ++

I would think that if you are running 18 inch wheels and he is running 19 inch wheels, that you have a gearing advantage in that alone.

An 18" wheel will rev up faster over a 19" wheel. It works out 5.3% gearing advantage for the smaller wheel.

Hey company man, not really if they matched the circumference/diamter of the 18-19" wheel, which we can only figure out if both tire sizes were provided.

Qmax, how did you clean your TB w/o screwing with your e-throttle? Did you disconnect the battery while doing it?

And joeyicu, you compared the 3.0 auto-5spd, and it will be night and day b/c the 3.0 has nothing compared to the 3.5l in low end usable power.

And of course the age old argument, driver error, he probably sucked at driving, but the 3.5 auto vs 6spd is more heated now because they are a lot closer in track times than the 3.0 auto-5M times.

They are closer in track times due to launches. The 6spd max should have been rear wheel drive because of all the torque steer. Even if you had the same HP and weight as a Z it would kick your *** off the line because it is RWD. The auto has an advantage off the line. With increasing the power of the Maxima Nissan did NOTHING to allow the car handle the power better. Thus the auto is now closer because they get a jump off of the line.

From a roll the 6 speed should, and will, eat up an auto ALL DAY LONG.

You can tell which guys have manual ^^^ cause they get so damn mad. Look at juice's car, basic bolt-ons abd the vb mod and his auto is eating away at 13's now!!! Hell yeah auto is working its way up. I still wish i had a 6-speed though

One thing I notice is that when looking at dynos they dyno pretty close to each other unlike the 3.0's.

u should have asked him what gear he downshifted to because if you took off from 50 mph, he should have been in second gear casue 2nd gear is like 65-70 becasue when car and driver and other magazines tested the 5.5 gen 6 speed, they hit o-60 in second gear in 6.0 seconds flat. my bro owns a 5.5 gen auto and I have a 6speed and i know i still take him even if I mess up at launching and even from a dead stop i will still take him.

if you're referring to your 6spd 4th gen, than the comparison is not apples to apples it's apples to oranges because of the weight difference.

i got a chance to drive a 2k3 auto the other day, and they really dont feel like they have less power and that is one awesome auto tranny. (as far as autos go), but i do still feel that the 6 spd could out perform the auto in this case because of the better gearing

i got some tb cleaner from pepboys and jsut sprayed it inside, i held open that little shield thign with a screw driver and sprayed it all over the place, when i started the car up it wouldnt rev over 2k , i disconected the battery for about 1/2 hr came back and the car felt like it was new again!

well when we both took off i droped the auto shift into 3rd i think he also down shifted into third fromt he sound of his engline we both punched it we were neck to neck for a sec then i jsut pulled 1/2 a car and satyed like that for a while untill i shut down. it was fun ,,, HEY CELICA when you wanna run again ??

Guys, I could swear my owner's manual for the 5.5 gen has a section about top speed in each gear for the M/T: first is 40, second is 80, third is maybe 120, fourth, fifth and sixth have "-" in the space for the top speed. Obviously the guy wasn't in second at the start.

BTW: I own a A/T w/ an Injen intake too. You have to look at the other differences: a body kit might reduce drag somewhat at 80+ and the tire diameter changing the effective gearing.

from what it sounds like he won by alot, so i dont really think the little things made him win by alot, maybe it was the driver of the other 6spd, maybe his auto is just fasssssttttt

sometimes certain cars from the factory run better then others, we call them factory freaks, there god sends, maybe factory freak 5.5 gen auto?

o and a 5th gen auto vs stick is an orange in an apple fest in this post, but its true for most cars, a manual will make it feel very diffrent, for one there are more gears to select, so they can usually be gears a bit lower, granted there are automatics that can pound it out and i would never have a manual in my bird, but generally speaking, they change a whole cars demeanor

no my car isnt fast or anything out of the ordinary, i raced celica (a member on the org not the car itsaelf) and we stayed pretty even. so i was just curious why i pullled on a stick with more mod then me. but figure that he wasnt a good driver possibly.

The difference just isnt that great any longer 02+ Maxima of both trannies vs 01's and older manual vs.auto, the times are close. The 6spd should have the advantage at high highway speeds otherwise its close, the same goes for 350Z's auto's vs manuals. The 3.5 powered cars in auto make good use of the torque.
