Gauges, Mileage, and Whistling w/ throttle

Ok, well, I thought I'd bring my problems to the know-it-alls:

1. My gauge needles "jump" (not gradually approach) to their destinations, especially when I start the car, the RPM needle jerks to the 1-2 grand area.

2. How many miles do you guys normally get to a tank in an auto 4th gen?

3. I noticed a whistling (turbo-like) sound coming from my engine this weekend after my trip. The sound's pitch cooresponds with the RPM level (higher pitched with higher RPMs). Anyone know anything about it?

Alright, well hopefully you all can help me. Thanks!

1. dunno
2. 350, tops usually i drive real fast and get on the gas for the 1st half of the tank, and try to make the 2nd half last as long as possible
3. Could be your alternator, or belts. My belts have a few cracks and need to be replaced, they make lots of noise the higher rpm

1) do you have gauge overlays (indiglo / reverse indiglo)?
2) 350-400
3) aftermarket intake? if so, that's your whistle. there's a thread in the faqs

1) yea thats because the engine is running at that rpm
2) i get about 325 out of 17 gallons
3) i notice the same sound, i kinda like it, i think its the stock intake(which i have on right now) and i usually hear it at about 75% throttle

1. ? (Does the engine actually change rpm?)
2. 325-360
3. Sure it not coming from under the dash?

If the rpm is not changing, maybe the electrical is. Put a volt meter on the cig lighter socket and watch the meter.

I had a whining noise from under the dash and the battery was not charging well. Bad cell. When I changed the battery, the whine stopped.

No, I don't have any indiglo gauges. However, I did at one time put them on, for about 2 hours alltogther and noticed the "stickiness" so I took them off. Once removed, the RPM needle still was messed up. I don't know.

Also, no, I don't have any aftermarket performance or engine tunes. So, the whistling is comign from something in the stock configuration.

Thanks again guys.

I'm about 90% positive its coming from the engine bay, its pretty faint and you can tell there's a lot of things between me and the sound.

lol thx, alternator whine is like a high pitched whine the alternator makes when its about to go out... it goes up and down with rpms.. might not be it since u have a whistle but if it is it could probably be why your electronics are going crazy.

Alternator is my first bet...but since you have an auto my car HAS been making a low, soft whistling noise that changes with speed, I think it's one of the output shafts on the transmission...it's only really noticable between 35 and 55 mph. It's been doing this for at least 80,000 miles, I'm not too worried...

a friend of mine told me it could possibly be a loose vacuum hose. he said that they have a tendency to make a high whistling when loose, sound right?

yeah they probably got jagged up when you either put your indiglos in or took them out. those needles are pretty sensitive. if you pull up on them a little too much you're going to screw them up

i got the same whispling noise coming from the engine. sounds like its coming near the throttle body area. its annoying the hell out of me since the noise is coming into my speakers and a making a annoying turbo sound as i accelerate.

does anyone know why the sound of the engine would come in through my speakers. i took my bose system out and put in a custom head unit and speakers. but now i got this annoying sound coming in. someone told me it might be my ground being misplaced in the engine area.

and how is everyone getting 300+ on a full tank. i barely get 280 - 300 miles and i only have 90,000 miles.

browne that wistling through ur speakers is a bad ground connection somewhere in your stereo. You should have that fixed or find a place that actualyl knows what there doing.

when the radio is off, the turbo sound is off as well. but i do hear a light whispling sound coming from the engine as i accelerate.

i believe my ground wiring is mounted to my car battery. definately gonna take it to a professional to redo the install.

thanks for the advice!
