sup fellas,

been away for a while but have a little problem. The rattle from the timing chain area has been increasing and its now at a point where my car sounds like a diesel engine. So I guess its time to change the timing chain then? Or is it the tensioner? My '98 has close to 130k miles..

Advice & links to pages describing the process would be most helpful.

man I right there with you, I cant stand the sound. I sound like a desil too and it pisses me off.

I believe its the tensioner that has to be changed, I think there is a link in the faws but I couldnt find it (was looking yesterday).

Heh...I wrote that, so you don't need any more help. Seriously, it's not that difficult....the guys that replied to my post basically cleared up any loose ends.

I actually did another write up a couple of months ago, because I changed the tensioner again. I guess they have a lifetime of about 120K miles. I currently have 400,000kms (242,000miles for the metric-challenged)), and my chain has never been changed. So there's no need to pay a mechanic to rip apart your engine to change it.

 

the timing chain is supposed to last as long as the engine. its not meant to be replaced unless it broke or something. thats why they used a chain, not a belt. when it rattles, just adjust/tighten the chain tensioner and youll be on your merry way. my mechanic did it for me when i took it in for a tuneup. after that your car will feel smoother without that annoying rattling sound.

 

my chain rattles on start up, and it use to rattle when i first got the car but some how a oil change shut it up.

I agree, the timing chain lasts for the life of the engine. Tho, I wonder heh, what is considered the "life of the engine", when the timing-chain/engine breaks? hehe. My timing chain has lasted 245K miles so far.

Anywho, how did your mechainc adjust the tensioner? Never heard of doing such thing. The tensioner has a piston, that pushes out with motor oil. Did he just loosen the bolts, and adjust it slightly to get more pressure on the guide?
