Ok. I will be converting to synthetic oil on my 97 max with 60k miles. I will be using mobil 1 for 12 month periods.
Here is my plan
1) engine flush
2) mobil 1
3) full-depth oil filter + bypass oil filter?

The questions that i have are:
What is the best oil filter i can buy?
I know there are the oem ones and there are also Full-depth ones that are better. Also, can someone explain to me a little better what the bypass filter does?

Thanks
I will also be converting my tranny to mobil 1 but i don't have any questions there...

Sorry this is off the subject (no disrespect sweetsound2001), but GNGXE, what numbers/times is your GN doing? My best friend has a T-Type with a GN engine built from the ground up by him and it is ridiculous fast. I drove it and I am scared of it!

Back on the subject, is there any synthetic brands to look out for in terms of low quality?

I wish it was like that. No 1/4 times yet,i am hoping for around 12.5s. It has stock turbo, int, and I use pump gas(not as good as race gas). The good part is,its always ready to go,no changing anything or prepping. after replacing so many things,I dont know if I would buy another. Handles great too

Ok, 12 monh periods are a bit to long for comfort, I would change the oil atleast every 10K miles or 6 months, which ever comes first. As for oil filters I use amsoil oil and oil filters and change them every 5K miles. My next choice for oil filters whold be nissan oem oil filters.

What is a bypass oil filter? Is this some sort of aux. oil filter you plan on customizing to work on your car? Hmm, strange.

No, i dont plan to customize my car's oil delivery and filtration system.
However, i read about that filter here:

Wow! That would take me all night to read. Any how there is only one oil filter on the max unless you go custom{waste of money probably}. BTW I like what you did to your car with the whole dyno mat setup, that must have been a pain in the **** do though.

SWEETSOUND2001:

I use Royal Purple on all my cars, and I have to say that it is the best and I mean the best motor oil I have ever used. I've gone through all of the brands, and Royal Purple is the BEST. I had a highly moded 240sx (pistons, bullfrog head, nitrous, etc.) and it was the only oil that could take that abuse.

Hasn't anybody else used this motor oil???

As for oil filters the only one I would use are nissan OEM.

Take care.

I was also intrigued by the Pure ONE filter, touting the most filtration. But, get this, because it filters so much, as a result of its thick filter medium, there are concerns of oil starvation with this filter. With a car like the Max with a 4 valve head, I said to myself "maybe not."

This oil filter study also mentions it;

I'm one of the few guys that run an Amsoil oil filter (and Amsoil motor oil); the filter is changed every 6 months.

ps the Amsoil filters are made by Baldwin, which is better known in the trucking and farming industry. The truckers go 15k-25k miles on the same brand oil filter...
