How to check for magnetized signal plate? need experienced help!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi everyone,

My 95 Maxima Gle is driving me nuts.

Brief history: The car sat for a couple years because it wouldnt start. Recently I have tried to resurrect it with no luck. The previous owner thought it may have been the crank position sensor, which was changed and it didnt help. The car used to have problems starting up when it was cold and/or when it hadn't been started for a couple of days. Eventually it would happen more and more until it would never start.

What I have changed so far: plugs, the crank position sensors, and cam sensor, ECM, all 6 coils, and coolant temp sensor. The harnesses plugging into the sensors all check out ok.

The problem that I have noticed is very bad spark scatter while watching the plugs fire when hooked up to the coils and grounded off on the valve covers. To double check this, I reinstalled plugs and hooked up a timing light. The light goes crazy (almost constantly on) and doesn't flash like you would expect while turning the motor over. You can also hear smal backfires coming up through the intake while turning the motor over and stepping on the throttle.

Im guessing maybe the signal plate (A/T) is magnetized, but how could i check it to make sure?

Am I missing anything else that could cause this? I'm at wit's end with this car. All help is gratefully appreciated.
