I was out driving around today when my friend pulled up behind me in his '97. Of course, before long we ended up side by side at a red light. His car is totally stock, check the sig for my mods. We both got a good launch when the light turned green, and he jumped about half a car length on me (stick vs. auto), but by the end of first gear we were almost even, and by the time I shut it down at the end of second I had a car length on him and maybe a little more.

Long story short, I was suprised. I know my car has more mods, but I have bigger wheels and an auto so I thought I would get trashed. Until this I was thinking about selling my y-pipe (old school Cattman makes lots of noise), but now I am a believer.

That's the thing. I know he got a good launch because he took me off the line, and his 1-2 shift sounded pretty good too (I had my windows down.) My car is probably better maintained than his, and I think the 95s are generally stronger than the 97-99s. Anyway, I was happy. He was talking trash.

That's part of it (the '95s being faster) but also remember that not all Maximas come from the factory with the same exact amount of power. Depending upon the 'meshing' of different components and materials used in the factory, your car can be as fast as a second faster than an otherwise identical Maxima. Good mantenence also plays a very important role.

You had an intake and a Y. That combo is killer. Those mods combined must have upped your HP by at least 25 horses. I'm contemplating the Y pipe, just waiting for someone to quell my concerns about noise.

OK, maybe 15-20 HP is more realistic. But they are a killer combo. It's like getting super-sized for free!

If he had a good launch and he actually shifted at 6200 RPM like he was suppose to for 1st gear?? he should have at least a half a car on you.. because you have already shifted.. then if he shifted 2nd to 3rd at 6500 RPM like he is suppose to.. he should have 1 - 2 cars on you.. a 95 GLE being the heaviest of the bunch is not going to be as fast as a strip down SE or a GXE... i go back with point 1.. he can't drive...

95-96 maximas are faster than 97-99 plus his mods I would have put my money on the 95 .... even if the 97 is std.

"faster" is not a good word....they are virtually the same car. There are very small differences. There may be some STOCK 95-96 maxs that are a LITTLE quicker than some 97-99s and vice versa. It's a VERY general and untrue statement to say that any 95-96 is faster than 97-99. I can show you if you would like; if you're ever in the chicago area....give a hollar and we can see just how much FASTER a 96 is than a 97.

Sprint,

Where did you get those shift points from?!?! No way man....the best shift points for a 4th gen max are 1-2 redline, 2-3 6000, 3-4 5800....if you don't believe me....ask anyone who has gotten a sub 15 second quarter mile time in a 4th gen.

Hey Sprint, my bud has a 97se 5spd bone stock. I have a 95GLE slush with mods. Street or strip I take him by 1 1/2 lengths. He shifts where Dave B does and got a 2.1 60' vs my 2.4. Times for that run were 15.2 for me and 15.3 for him. He's a great driver. We eack have the exact same 16" se rims so it makes for a good comparison.

If you've ever looked at a dyno run of a max....you'd notice that the power drops off after around 5800-6000 rpms. So why would you want to stay in a gear for the extra 500rpms while losing acceleration, when you can drop right into the next gear's sweet spot. Now, when you run your "14.7" what gear do you cross the line in?

BTW: I never said that I had a "problem" running under 15 in the quarter....where did you get that from???

His SE is fully loaded (sunroof leather power seats bose) as is my GLE. Neither of us really gut our cars, we just take out all cargo. We each had under a quarter tank of gas. The track where we go has scale and we weighed our cars. Mine was 3090 and his se was 3050. Probably weight of the trans. I don't know the numbers for his shift points, but he uses Dave B's points and Dave seems to have researched them from trial and err as well as dyno.
