I need a non bling bling universal muffler

Any suggestion? Seems like all the stainless steel mufflers are polished. The exhaust law in VA is ghey. I need to replace my muffler with something without a tip and that has a dull finish.

If you want something cheap and your not looking for performance go to a muffler shop and pick up a cheap old OEM style one.

What happened? Are ya getting crap from the cops or from the inspection people? I thought as long as it isn't too large or loud ya should be fine.... I mean, technically I know that straight through mufflers and such aren't legal... but do they really check that?

Yeah, I'm guessing its pretty much the same in most states... it just comes down to actual enforcement by the authorities, that's why I'm so curious to know what happened to him because I'm in VA too.... never had a problem with my GReddy though... then again, I am looking to sell it soon to get something less attention seeking...

It's the po po that I'm worrying about. Once they get behind you, they see the bling bling can. It's an automatic ticket. I still want to have maximum performance so as long as it's not visually bling. When it's not bling, they can't really say it's aftermarket. They aren't equip with sound testing equipment so only thing they can go by is visual.

Gotcha... that's why I'm getting rid of my GReddy asap... its ugly anyways... plus I live in cop central... where are ya in Herndon? Do ya hook up with any of the local guys here at all? I'm right by Fair Oaks Mall and have met up with several of the 5th Gen guys and Fashizl, who has both 3rd and 4th Gens I think...

Here in NYC I've been pulled over for it... I have a flowmaster with a resonator and Y pipe and its still loud.. They can hit you with a few summonses at once if they want you... 1 its noise pollution 2 even though its a full working muffler they can hit you for a faulty exhaust and 3 for changing your stock one...

I feel your pain... I'd even go as far as go to a local auto parts store and ask for a stock Maxima muffler... Walker or other exhaust companies make them... you can even look through the stores catalog and look up mufflers by Walker by their dimensions... just an idea

Why dont you use a 5th gen muffler?

I would have to convert the dual tip to a single tip if I go with 5th gen muffler. I have a skyline rear bumper so dual tip would look really really funny.

My bad... if your cool with any auto parts store look through whatever exhaust company they carry book of exhausts, they usually have dimensions for universal mufflers so you can get any size you want for about $40

what about the 'welded' series by dynomax. it's made from aluminum, so it's not as shiny as SS.

I like my dynomax superturbo. Not bling at all. Looks like a new stock one (not rusted to **** like my old one). It's somewhat louder than stock when you get on it, and just barely (sp?) when cruising.

get a flowmaster or dynomax or something to that extent. Check out jeggs or summit. They come in dull finish and still free flowing.

I made it through 4 years in one of virginia's tuffest traffic law areas! Only ticket I ever got was for my front 2 windows being 42%. I have a stillen muffler and I would say it is shiney, blingey blingey bling bling it is not. If they can give you a ticket then they have to give every silverado with dual exhaust a ticket. Plus you have to give them a reason to pull you. On top of that, you go to an exhaust shop and get another muffler , what is the difference from the one you have now? You have a replacement muffler! thats all. Or spray yours with some flat black..................

This is what I say to all va enforcement

Keep it and just dont polish it. Once the shine will go away they cant give u beef but they can still suspect that the muffler or exhuast is aftermarket because the whole car is hooked up and they'll be like "doesnt this guy have a muffler"? Plus if they want to screw u over they can on anything not just the muffler.

....I think Tony's not only draws attention because it is shiney, but it is also quite loud (much louder than most exhausts I have heard on Maxes). I know Remus makes very nice products, they are expensive though. But they are not loud at all and the actual muffler is black in color, you may want to look into that.

They are a german company and produce exhausts for VW(factory upgrade), BMW and some higher end cars. They are not loud....if you look around I am sure you can find some info. I am going to get a remus muffler if I ever get harrased about my exhaust.

Actually I think Remus mufflers are Austrian. To me knowledge they do make a axle-back for the 4th Gen Maxima, but it is very price (~$500). However if you're looking for something stock, this isn't your ticket. The single-turbo muffler that would be used for our cars has a very fancy tip. They do sound excellent though, and you can pick a univeral one up on eBay for around $200.

I have a hooker aerochamber from jegs for like $50. straight thru 2.5 inch. It is painted flat black and needs a tip welded on. Very deep sound. Loud at WOT but dead quiet on the interstate.

If you have a Y pipe every straight through is loud. Find a chambered muffler, paint it black, problem solved. Stock is usually the best anyhow.

I have a stillen ypipe, no cat, stillen b pipe and stillen rear section. It's probably the loudest setup. Anyway, I might go with a 3" system later down the road. For right now, I'll just paint the Stillen muffler.

I know it's not a universal muffler, but Cattman is fairly quiet from what I have read, and looks kind of stock with the conservative dual tip muffler. It is ss, so bling factor may be a problem it the cops are being really picky about it.
