mine use to do that. I jacked up the front end (used jackstands of course), found the linkage, and tightened it up. there is a rod/cable with two nuts that need to move a slider forward or backwards to ajust the slack. Go to far and you'll never get it into reverse.

This worked for mine. Hope it helps.

don't tighten the cable because it'll just tighten it one direction and not the other.

bushing is in the red circle

it's above the cat..you have to loosen the heat shield above it.

most likely the bushing there is gone...hence the slack.

The bushing is available from Nissan and is fairly cheap. It's very common for it to wear out. To change it, you'll need to loosen up the heat shield above the cat to get to it. It's very easy to do and makes a world of difference.

While your at it, get the second bushing for the other end. Its cheap maintinance, this way you won't have to go under the car twice. The second one is located where the tranny cable meets the tranny.

Like Dan said, DO NOT ADJUST THE CABLE LENGTH, believe me its not fun to constantly adjust that thing to get it right. If you simply replace the bushings the cable length does not change.
