Nasty smell coming from air vents

when ever i first start my car and turn eaither the heat or the a/c on this gross smell comes out like some one took a fat dump in the air vents i was wondering if anyone else was experiencing this and what they did to fix this.

just pull out the center vent, spray febreeze it it and let it sit for awhile. then start your car with the air on hi. spray more febreeze into the inlets under the windshiled wipers. turn it off and let it sit awhile. should fix it

I think autoparts stores sell this stuff to get rid of mildew in the ventilation system. Same thing, you spray it into the air intake (under the wipers) and it'll clean out the mold and mildew. I guess febreeze can do the same thing...

Another way to remove the bad smell.

1)Replace in-cabin filter
2)Get the heater going strong and when it's hot, spray Lysol or some sort into the holes underneeth the wiper blades. I sprayed about 10 sec.

My mechanic had a dead rat inside his car(under the hood, somewhere). This could be a problem.

i kno they got sumtin thats supposed to kill the smell that u spary in ur vents outside the windsheild ...also there is a soulution at auto zone that u pour into your windsheild whiper fluid and wen u got the heat or ac on hit the washer fluid and the liquid dips down into the outside vent n makes it smell nice n rosey

I used ozonium to kill the new car smell back when I was selling car. They sell it at Wal-Mart. You spray it into the vents and let it recirculate. It really works.

The way Nissan tells you to do it is replace the cabin air filter, then spray this disinfectant they sell, i think it's like lysol, directly onto the heater core and down the drain tube. Then to clean the draintube(i don't know why it comes afterwards) so that it won't let water stand and get all nasty.
