ok you know how you are supposed to turn off AC and other things like that if you are racing because they drain horsepower...would it be possible to rig something up so at WOT the AC would shut off? i like this idea but seems a little bit really hard.

This is a good idea, and Nissan had the idea before you did. The Engine Control Module powers the coil on the A/C compressor relay. At Wide Open Throttle the compressor clutch is disengaged.

Is this true for all Maximas? Auto or stick?

I won't swear it is true for all Maximas, but I think it is. The A/C cut-off is not a new idea. My '87 Stanza had it.

Sounds logical was that designed solely for the purpose of freeing the lost horsepower or was there another reason for it?

AFAIK it is solely to maximize acceleration. The idea is that the driver is asking for maximum performance, so let's give it to him. At Wide Open Throttle the Engine Control Module applies less stringent emission control measures too.

a lot of cars do it... my '91 miata did too...

that's why when people asked if i ran with the AC on at the track, I said yes... because I did!

it's hot in Sacramento, and you're not allowed to open your window during the 1/4 mile (not to mention it hurts drag) so i'd basically leave the AC on all the time... you can tell it turns off as you can smell and feel that the air is coming out more humid than when the AC is on...

i don't have a fsm, but seem to believe that both the 5sp and auto 4th gen's i've had do turn off the ac during wot.

btw, what does AFAIK stand for?

Initializations

Sorry, I didn't intend to be cryptic. There are many initializations which are in common use on the Web. If you see an unfamiliar one you may use an on-line "dictionary" to interpret it.

These are good, and there are others.

AFAIK = As Far As I Know

Re: Initializations

DBM - I just want to say thanks.

I found this site about 2 months ago
and it has been quite helpful.

I began by looking over the FAQs
and then started looking over the previous posts
- and your posts turn up a lot.

Glad you have a Maxima
and furthermore that you're willing to share your wealth of knowledge.

Anyway, just wanted you to know I appreciate it.

That's a nice compliment. Thank you. Sharing is part of the automotive hobby for me.
