White powder on battery + terminal

There is a lot of some white powdery stuff on the + battery terminal. The negative terminal is OK. I had this happen all the time on my old car too. I clean it regularly.
What is it and, more importantly, how do I prevent this?

Also, why is there a power steering fluid cooler in front of my radiator? I thought it was a factory tranny cooler but the other day I took a closer look and saw that the two hoses are connected only to the power steering fluid reservoir.

The white powdery stuff is corrosion, mineral deposits from the metal becoming and returning ot its natural ore form, reverse process basically.

Use baking soda and water to clean it, some people place a penny on the battery to prevent it, but I just keep it clean, will cause you headaches if you ignore it.

Remove the connectors from the battery terminals and clean all the metal parts with a wire brush. Hook everything back together. Cover the terminals with a coat of di-electric grease or hit them with a shot of cheap spray paint. The idea is to keep them out of contact with the air so the corrosion can't build up again.

On the power steering cooler, many cars have them. The power steering fluid can get quite hot, this is a way to throw off the excess heat, that's all.

Your car is addicted to drugs. The white powder on your battery terminals is just residue left over from your car hitting some coke. LOL

One of my friends was helping me do my CAI....removed my battery and tray while i was under car checking something else. I ate some of it. I felt myself dying for quite some time. Cheers.

Clean your terminals with a battery terminal brush, and sprinkle baking soda over any white powder or wet spots.
The reason it is probably only around one terminal is because it has a slight leak, just enough for the battery acid vapors to go through when they get warm. This is a very common occurence, so don't worry about it. I personally use the green and red felt rings from AutoZone, Wal Mart, etc, on all my battery posts, and have for years. I have never had this problem since. I also use the battery terminal spray on both posts after putting them on. Kinda "seals" them from any possibility of corroding.
Yeah, becareful working around battery corrosion or acid. The stuff does tingle when it gets in a cut. Actually, I had a hangnail once, and was willing to amputate my arm at the elbow when the acid got on it (kidding). I've also ruined several pairs of pants from it. If not washed right away, you'll notice holes in them the next day.

They sell those red and green rings that feel like a scrubbing sponge at AutoZone. You place the rings on the terminals and it'll never happen again.
