Lately I've noticed how hard it is to drive at night with dirty headlights and windshield. When headlights come at you, all the dirt makes it hard to see out. So, I decided to clean my windshield today, but after cleaning it really good, you can see the space left behind by the wipers as opposed to the rest of the windshield. Is this bad for the glass at all, or could it be that this part of the windshield is "cleaner" than the rest of it, no matter how much I try to clean the entire thing?

Depends on your insurance. Some give you 1 free windshield a year (don't abuse it), but you'll have to ask your agent if you have that or not. Some offer glass coverage for things like this, but it depends on your state and insurance company.

I just called my agent, they claim they do free repairs but not replacements.

Have you tried any sort of glass polish? It's a mild abrasive cleaner that will scrub off any deposits left behind on the glass from the wipers or road tar etc.... I usually do my windows twice a year. It may help. However if your windshield is truely scratched from grit on the wipers, there's nothing that will remove that.

It's not scratches, at least I don't think so. After using windex and a rag to wipe down the windshield real good, the total area that the wipers cover is clearer than the rest of the glass. I'm pretty sure there isn't any real damage done. I always wipe my wipers clean too. Takes a little while as so much dirt tends to soak into the rubber part. But it gets done. Come to think of it, I'll really notice it after it snows and begins to melt. For instance, let's say it snows a couple inches, I don't drive my car at all after it snows, and then a while later it will melt, and the "wiper" area of the glass melts away first. Weird stuff.

flavor....call them and tell them that your windshield was smashed by vandals(unrepairable). if they will cover it...hit it with a bat!

 

Hmmm insurance fraud or clean the windshield with a better product.....it's so hard to decide which would be the smarter course of action.

 

i'd like to see one person who has gotten in touble with an insurance company over a windshield

 

I have heard but never tired, using tooth paste to remove minor scratches and stuff off a windshield. might try that.

 

1Z Glas Polish can fix that no problem....

 

Keep in mind if you get a new windshield, from what I heard, it will never be sealed as well as it was from the factory.

i think i have heard somthing like that too, well not about windshields but on watches, its worth a shot, but for an entire windshield it could require alot of tooth paste, lol.

 

I have that problem, especially with the wipers since the weather in NM is brutal in the summer that dries out the rubber and now the cold weather, it's harden the rubber and it's hard to wipe it clean.

 

i had a problem with the wiper blades leaving a residue on the windshield that wouldnt come off. i tried some regular vinegar and it rubbed off
