Are NGK platinums really necessary?
I am using Bosch Platinum 4's.. they are fine to use.. my cousin is also 97 SE, and my friend Steve 97 SE is also using them

Since you only replace plugs every 60,000 miles, the NGK plugs are not that expensive. I don't think the Bosch ones are rated for 60k anyway. So if you have to change them ie... twice in 60k, are you really saving anything? Especially w/ the hassle of 2x the labor and the ? of the plugs are really doing it's job or not? Just just the Nissan platinums and have one less thing to worry about.

The regular Bosch platinums are the ones people have problems with. Folks seem to have pretty good luck with the +4's. I've used the regular Bosch platinums in other cars with bad results, but have never tried the +4's.
Good Luck!

FWIW, some peeps on these forums regard the owner's manual as gospel. In my 1997 owner's manual, on pages 7-17, 8-6, and 8-8 it mentions replacing with platinum-tipped plugs only.
The owner's manual doesn't specify which brand of platinum-tipped plugs to use.

I have never heard of anyone having problems with the stock NGK's unless they were defective. We have heard some praise and horror stories when using other than NGK. Does this say anything, why take a chance, pay a little more for the plugs that's proven, don't you guys think Nissan thought of different plugs before putting in the NGK? Lastly, your car cost 20-30K and we're talking about different plugs to save $4-5/plug x 6 = $24-30.
I hear the 5th generation uses double platinum tip to last 100K, this should be posted as a question.
