That Damn Box

Hey guys what the hell is it with that damn box that is connected to the intake of the maximas but not to the 300zx i thought the 2 engines were the same minus the intake manifold what is it for and can it be removed with a modification of any sort i removed it before and ran the engine and the throttle body started smoking any suggestions will help with the intake that i am trying to build or rebuild.

Thanks

You can pretty much do whatever you want to the intake, BUT:
You must attach the vacuum lines to the new setup, and make sure the air sensor is hooked up right. What you are talking about is most likely the resonator box. It serves no purpose other than to make the Maxima sound like a boring 4-door family sedan. To get rid of it, you'll have to do some minor custom work to re-route the plumbing.

As for the Z31's intake setup, the actual motor itself is the same, but if you've ever looked at the engine bay of a Z31, it's MUCH different than a Max's. First, they're RWD, so everything is "sideways." Second, you'll notice that there is no room for anything. They even had to tilt the radiator to get it to fit under the sloping hood. So the intake plumbing is different simply cuz the engine bay layout is different.

Build intake like so:

Call it a day.

Also a simple belt driven or exhaust driven intake works very well.

se86 where did you get your strutt tower bar from? and its not the resonator box that is connected to the mass air flow sensor that connects therethen does some kind of variation and is 90 degrees dierctly below the throttle body.

I have an intake as well but I left my 'black box' in the car just because emissions stuff is screwed to the top. For the guys that have intakes what did you do with it? If you took it out what did you do with the crap that is hooked to the top of it?

Sarin....I think you need more wire loom

Actually, my resonator box and airbox got removed from the car completely. It's just a vast space underneath my MAF. The thing you described that the intake hose from the TB is a resonator box. Then it wraps back around to the MAF, then to the airbox.

Carson...didn't I tell ya? The wireloom is good for 20whp per every foot!

I think I will just leave mine in...unless of course one day I get boared and take it out for no aparent reason (usually the way things happen).

-Sarin, I never knew you were pushing over 600 whp (judging by the pic), that thing must be had to keep in the road
