I am having this weird problem with air conditioner on a 96 Maxima. Started last summer on hot 80 Degree + days the A/C stops working. The compressor does not kick in because the pressure switch cuts it off. This normally happens in the afternoon during the hottest part of the day. It appears the problem is related to heat and humidity. The car has been at dealer three times, so far they have located and fixed two bad wires on a harness that goes around the engine. They still think it is electrical, yesterday I took it back while A/C quit in the afternoon. They were looking at it for more than an hour and it started working again. Is there anything some one can think of or recommend at this point.

Do you have this? If so, there is a self test that can be done on it. You could even do this yourself. If you do have ACC and the dealer has not done it yet, then they need to pull their head out and get to it.

Just a guess here. I would suspect that the AC cuts off to protect the engine. The AC is a heat pump. You feel cold air but it releases heat to generate it. I gonna guess that when the ac is on, it stresses the engine enough to raise the coolant temp. If the coolant temp rises to a certain level, I bet it switches the AC off until it cools down. That would explain why the AC suddenly started working again after it sat for 1 hour at the dealer.

I would check the cooling system and see if the level it up, the thermostat is working okay etc...

If you have a GLE, then you should have ACC. The GLE is the most expensive model.
