how do you rate your max in the snow?
how do you rate your max in the snow?
my 2k auto has excelent tires and this has got to be one of the worst fwd cars ive ever driven in the snow. i also have 2 ford sho yamaha taurus's and the 93 is awesome, the 97 is average. how about you?
I would give mine a 9.5 for grace and style, but the difficulty knocks it down to a 7.0. Now if only Nancy Karagan "falls" and breaks her leg, my max would make bottom tier of the winners block!
yokahama predator's 235/45/17 400 tread rating, AA traction,AA temperature z rated.$360 out the door! i had pilots and ziex512 and these are better than both,vs/pilots u can buy 3 sets to 1 set of pilots, and these blow away the falkens
i drive very hard, got 16,000 out of the pilots. these have a higher tred rating wich inturn should last longer, research how many z rated tires in that size have 400? u wont find more than 1 or 2, and these are quieter also. falkens dont compare at all, also had michelin mx4m when i got the car, those super quiet, handle average
I just had my first experience with mine in a few inches of snow tonight and I can say that it's not wonderful. I have Continental ContiExtreme Contacts on stock rims. I had a really hard time getting up a driveway, though it was fairly steep to be fair and had not been cleared in any way. Once I was on the flat to mildly hilly road, I was fine with a few inches of snow out there. Sure, I slid a little now and then, but unless you have AWD, I think that's unavoidable.

Maybe some people just suck at driving, because I have craptenzas still all the way around (I refuse to buy new tires untill these are completely done as I commute and drive 35k mi/yr) and when I drove in a few inches of snow and some Ice it wasnt all that bad. I know the Potenzas are the greatest, but they are not as EXTREMELY BAD as everyone makes them out to be. I saw about 35 cars wrecked on 95 from Fredericksburg to Richmond and I barely even slid and I was going with traffic. Maybe some of you guys need to recheck your driving skills!
If it snows here in TX my Max stays home and I call in to work and take the day off. It's not my (bad) ice/snow driving ability that worries me but all the other psychopaths out here who have even less ice/snow driving experience than I do.
Also, my Toyo 4's are already sufficiently firm when cold outside, in the ice they would be like driving on hard plastic tires. Ouch. And trying to accelerate up a hill with 250 hp and FWD...

i had the craptenzas on for the first snow storm and could barely keep the car on the road since then i have gotten a better set of tires and i think that the max is an all around good car in the snow but i think that the fact that i have the 6 speed also helps with winter driving.

Btw, I'm sure you're a good driver... but just be careful with those Potenzas...
all three brands were giving me the same impression,i duno? my 93 sho is absolutly the best fwd car ive ever driven in the snow(sold car 2weeks ago) my 97 is ok. ive had mustangs, coevettes, chevelles, road runners, firebirds, z28, acura, cadillac, lexus and by far the max is at the bottom, 93 sho ruled bad weather
I have Falken-Ze512, and honestly i think they are a pile of crap in the snow. great in rain and dry traction, but tonight was out right scary, i maybe spoiled because of my 4x4 explorer suv, but trust me , my wife in her stock mazda 3 tires was getting better traction then i was in my maxima tonight.
Coming downhill on i684 north in westchester with rain/snow ice, i felt like the rear was going to give out any second. i was going about 15 to 20 with pace of traffic and i was scared for my dear life. The entire rear felt like it was going give out. I know maxima is a front wheel and when going down hill the weight in the front is going to push it forward but maxima's always been horrible in the snow. My 94 Maxima almost killed me few times back 2000. I know not everyone has the same experience as me, but belive it or not i was only 2k2 maxima on the road or infact only maxima to begin with on the road. took me 3 hours to get home tonight.
dont ask me why i didnt take the truck, i was being lazy and actually thought it was going to be just "rain" as per the F**** weather channel.

I have traction control on my 03 GLE, and the car does ok (but not great) in the snow. Having some skill and experience also helps (I have 20 years under my belt), but the OEM tires (Turanza EL 42s) are far from being excellent.
i have 24000 miles on my potenzas.. honestly they are still good in dry roads, and sometimes the rain on certain days. I slid like a **** on the stock tires on one drive back to waltham Ma when there was an inch of snow though.
Honestly I've been shopping around for tires the past 5 months, and i still havent found the perfect tires.
These are the tires I have heard, Continental Contiextreme, FAlken ZE512, Michellin Pilots, Pzero Nero, Traction T/As, Nokian, Proxes, etc.
I want Falkens, but suddenly 50 people on the orgs says it sucks.. lol sucks!!!
so far i think i can keep my tires till 30000 miles then ill just change them. the winter weather is almost over i hope... two more months.?????

this is going to sound like the most ghetto thing to you guys...
i grew up in maine. i just moved to colorado a week ago. i have been driving in the snow since i was 15. i have only owned one car that wasn't a stick, and it was a used police car. heck, it's snowing right now. (i'm trying to establish credibility...)
the potenzas are crap.
the falkens are pretty good. for the money, they're great.
the best car that i've ever driven in the snow was a 1988 dodge colt vista with available 4wd on the fly. for a front wheel drive car, this maxima is better than the 95 and 97 accord, the 95 jetta, the 92 gti, and even (dare i say it) the 97 maxima.
if you want traction in a front wheel drive car, put a huge bag of sand in the trunk. back when i had the accords and the vws, it was the only way i could keep them on the road, what the back ends being so light.
all right guys, fire away...

To me it has allot to do with Tires, then again i work in the tire industry so these things may or may not matter. The Pootenzas i had were TERRIBLE in *Any* kind of Cold/wet weater. I have Kumo Kh11's on there now, and they do great, just as long as you drive like it is snowing. (I.E. if it is snowing or raining, no excessive Throttle Etc) i do not hear allot of people talk about the Kh11's, but i am a satisfied Customer.
I'm rolling on the deathtenzas - i rate them a 1 in the snow, 2 in the rain & a 3 for dry weather. I'm just trying to wear them out b/c i can't just toss them while they're still pretty new. (i only have 14K miles on my car)
I live in Minnesota and bought a 2000 Maxima SE that had Potenza's on them. Those tires were nearly undriveable in the snow, I been driving on snowy roads in Minnesota for 15 years and Maxima/Potenza combination is the worst I have ever driven... even worse than my '76 rear-wheel drive Cutlass with bald tires.
I replaced the 17" rims and Potenza's with 16" rims and a good all season tire. I would say it has improved to "fair" in the snow. The Maxima could really use traction controll, all that horsepower and light weight just doesn't make for a good winter driving car.
Much to my dismay, almost all new cars with plenty of horsepower are coming with 17 and 18" low profile tires. Those are great in the summer, but dangerous for those of us who have to drive in the snow several months of the year.

aliti, all of us greeks think alike, We all have the flag hanging from our rear view mirror. my tires suck. I have HOE_tenzias LOL, they are used and abused. No acually they are fairly new but in the rain I can easly loose control because they suck that bad.
wish we had snow. it's been all rain this season. (bought snowboarding pass for nothing). my 03 friends try not to drive in the snow. I know I'll take it easy. these RSAs slip and hydo in the rain bad enough.
IMHO , with 30+ years driving
I know that this may date me, but i grew up in Montreal (read-wet,heavy snow, freezing rain etc). Now i'm in Edmonton where its -28C this week, roads are ice rutted & polished - will turn to black ice at next warming trend.
I know I'm going to slammed for this - as some of the other posters have stated - not ANY tire is going to get you out of a situation because of ATTITUDE! You can't be driving as though it's summer, hard accels, braking, turning. The tires can modestly help you in evasive actions.
That said, I still go with a full winter package of hankook 401's, best bang for my buck. I also ran these on my Maxda 929 RWD! The RE92's are going back on in the spring, though not the worst tires, certainly not as bad as many quoted. When these wear out - looking at the BFG Traction t/a's or Michelin Hydroedge.
sorry - got off page from original subject. the Maxima scores 8/10. The best car I've ever had in the snow was - '80's Ford Escort with SKINNiest 165/80?
Michelin tires - lots of sipping & good psi on the road. Went thru snow, mud & ice like nothing with that car, aw to be young again, sigh!
