I am considering purchasing a 1996 nissan maxima. it has 175K miles. the owner showed me that all of the scheduled maintanence has been performed.

i haved searched this forum for 'common problems' but can't get a good "hit" on the topic.

can someone help me out by listing some common problems with 97-ish maximas
or give any advice on things to ask about when discussing with the present owner?

 

175k miles I would start worrying about the tranny. If it was maintained properly the engine should still run strong.

One common problem among Maxima's with Bose is that, well, it usually starts to act up at this age, just like any other Generation Maxima prior to the 4th gen with one.

 

1995 and 96 apparently have a differential bearing problem for those with the manual tranny. My 96 is at 112k and no prolems yet. I am hopping this is not a problem that will plauge ALL 5 speeds of these years. Consequently, you will here many recommend 97s and newer.

I am actually curious to here others who have 95 and 96 5 speeds who have high miles and no problems? Any out there?

 

i sold my 95 at 120000 and it didnt have any tranni problems.

 

I am an owner of 97 max. I bought it used with 22k in 99. (86k now) I use it to travel(thousand-mile round trips). I never had major problems with it. ( I did major maintenance every 30k miles) My housemate also has a 95 max. He bought it brand new and has more than 170k now. He never had major problems neither. If the owner takes care of the max, it should be fine.
