Clutch/Tranny noise

I met a fellow max guy today who has an interesting problem. There is a almost grinding noise coming from the clutch or tranny when the clutch pedel is out, when he pushes it in, nothing, out its back. It almost sounds like a dry bearing or something. He has been told its a throw out bearing, does that sound accurate to you guys or not? I was under the impression that the TO bearing shouldn't make noise when the clutch is completely disengaged, right or wrong? Thanks for the knowledge.

your right.. its not a throw out bearing because you woul only hear that when it is engaged adn the bearing has pressure applied to it. its a bearing in the tranny, i have the same problem. i have no idea where it is.. your friend most liekly needs a rebuild.

well thats not a good thing to hear. How long has your car done it, or in other words is it a problem that will need immediate attention? I don't wanna be the bearer of bad news, so will it be a problem in the near future?

It could be the input shaft bearing going bad. My third gen did something similar, it had a very consistant "whirring" noise that sounded like George Jetson's hovercraft especially in first and second gear. It would also make the noise in neutral with the clutch pedal out. I changed my whole tranny but you could just get the input shaft bearing repaired and that would probably cost less. Good luck.
