As i'm waiting to hear the word from my mechanic to see if my car is totalled or fixable, I thought I'd share this mod.

It's a trunk release mechanism using parts that you can find at home depot.
The basic concept here is to have your trunk swing open after you press the trunk release. Maybe some tech savy people can add to the design by adding hydraulics. I'd do it myself but I no longer have my car. Anyways as is, i've found this mod to be extremely helpful when my hands are full, or when i'm too lazy to lift the trunk lid myself.

I'm too tired to do a write up at the moment, but I think from the pictures it'll be self explanatory interms of parts that you'll need.

Anyways, it's been fun folks. Happy Modding.

quick note... the pics show what the mechanism looks like when it's dangling, but when it's all said in done you squeeze the anchor (don't remember the exact name) and stick it in the washer hole. This anchors the spring to the frame so that the spring stretches when the lid closes.

a spring loaded trunk opener? This is like 007 thing.. you pop the trunk and it rockets open disarming the enemy spy when it cracks him/her in the chin with your spoiler.

Why didnt you just adjust the trunk springs in the trunk to pop up higher?

The trunk lid is kinda heavy with the spoiler. Didn't think the trunk springs where capable of popping the lid all the way open. My way seemed like an easy solution. Really only one helper spring would suffice, however in the pics I have two. And when it's all said and done the springs tuck away nicely and out of the way. Were you able to adjust the trunk springs on your car? Please share the details as that would seem like a cheaper alternative.

Nupe: The clip dangling from the end of the spring is an anchor. If you feel around your trunk you'll find a hole next to the hinge. That hole is actually kinda big so If i were to put the anchor into that hole it would fall out and the spring would not be anchored to something thus the spring wont stretch, and that's where the washer comes in. That washer is glued covering the original hole. The washer reduces the size of the anchoring hole as seen in the picture. Slip the anchor through the hole and now the spring will be held in place. Now when you shut your trunk lid the spring will stretch as the hinge of the trunk rotates to a new position. If you know where that hole is you'll have a better mental image of what i'm talking about and the leverage involved.

You could always just get a CF trunklid.

I put struts on mine some time last year and really like it. I cant take credit for it because I copied it from Matt93SE but its a nice feature...especially if you had a spoiler and took it off but dont want to mess with the torsion rods.

and a little video of me popping the trunk---right click save as please

I like the spring idea too. If my struts get worn I may put some springs on to help the struts out some.

I believe when you pull down on the torsion bars that applies more pressure so when you pop the trunk, it opens up higher.

Thanks for the pics on your mounting locations, I really have to get around to doing this in the spring.. damn torsion bars are in the way of my sub box..

I have no idea on a 5th gen because I have never looked in the trunk of one. I mounted mine on the strut towers.

I did use hood struts on both sides.

you guys crack me up. 007 has had this feature on his car for years, and all it took was a bungy cord hooked up to one of the trunk swing arms and bottom of the rear deck. the trunk pops all the way open every time and you can't see it unless you stick your head in the trunk and look up

the only reason i would post in an old thread is to avoid getting b!tched at for asking a question everyone else feels is unworthy of a new thread.
but i can see nobody has any new info to give on this thread so i give up.

WOW if I hadnt had someone PM me I wouldnt even know so many people have questions about that set up. I am hardly on the ORG any more and I am never on the general forum when I do come on here.

I have my email in my sig so people can email me with questions but no one did lol.

Lets see if I can get these questions answered.

1. The strut I used was made by Strong Arm

2. The part number is 4683

3. I got them from Advance Auto

all that info is summed up in this pic (well except the advance auto part ):

4. I cant remember if the struts came with the ball connectors or I had them from something else (I do have 2 3rd gen parts cars) but anyway what I did was drill the hole for the one in the arm and tapped it with the correct thread (sorry dont remember the tap thread size) and just screwed the ball connector in. For where its at on the strut tower I just used a nut on the other side because the metal is too thin to tap.

5. I didnt have a spoiler in the video but I had a stillen type II that was much lighter than stock and it allowed the trunk to slam up with the factory springs (because the stock spoiler is so heavy and needs the stronger springs).

6.These will also work with a factory spoiler and a lot of sound deadening material according to Matt who originally gave me the strut number.

7. They do in fact hold the trunk up without any problems. I am sure over time they will weaken just like hood struts but you can just pop them off and get new ones.

Just because these struts work on my 3rd gen it doesnt mean they will work on any other generation. Use common sense and measure to make sure.

Good luck.

and in the future if you see a post by me and have a question please feel free to email me. I am not on the org at all unless someone PMs me or something (and I hate having to sign on just to get a PM and much rather use email...hence the reason I put my email addy in my sig).
