What Would Happen By Gutting The Cat.. OR installing a Test Pipe

What would be some after effects of gutting the cat..

i have a Cali spec I30. but there is no emmission? immision? testing in florida, so i could do it if i wanted.

would the car blow out lots of smoke? smell? burn oil? lose power?

would i have to move the oxygen sensor that is behind the cat?

But could i set up a sparking system so i could shoot flames out the side of my Exhaust cut-out once the cat is gutted (still having pre-cats?)

Check my car-domain page for pics of the cut-out! let me know.. thanks

hmm maybe ill leave it un-gutted then.

although the car has 86000 miles. do you think anything is blocking it up? and what would it sound like out of my exhaust cut-out if i didnt have the cat or the resonator?

Deep?
Rice?
Crackle?

if you keep the stock y pipe then its going to be pretty bearable. i had a ypipe, stock cat, custom b pipe with no resonator then the stock muffler. i thought it had a great tone til i put headers on. it was a very odd metallic sound afterwards til i put a resonator back on. the resonator isnt that much of a restriction, its the crimps right after the cat and right after the resonator that are blocking flow.
if you have a fed spec 00 then the cel should come on if a test pipe is installed. the cali spec model has the secondary o2 sensors before the main cat so a test pipe would not trip it in that scenario.
if i were you, id plan in the future to get a ypipe because it is going to be your biggest gain in your exhaust. in that case, id go with a test pipe or even stock cat to an aftermarket b pipe w/ resonator then the stock muffler. then when/if you get the ypipe, you wouldnt have to change anything else.

good info thank-you.

But Now well put my full exhaust into it. say im running a straight pipe all the way after stock Y-pipe. and have no muffler. (right now i have no muffler but still have the Cat in there)(check the website) but do you think i would be shooting flames at night, cause that is kinda my goal! WOOT WOOT

you will not have flames..that would only happen if your timing was off and the exhaust valves were opening early when the cumbustion was happening.

if your car is running properly you wont have unburned fuel.
you would have to spray fuel...same principles as afterburner on a fighter aircraft

bad MAF, no cats, Greddy EVO1 and shifts at redline into 3rd will pop 2 foot long flame out the exhaust Gutting the cat is going to make the exhaust sound like azz, tin can sound due to the empty cat canister. Think of it this way, Folgers can in the middle of your car with the catback connected to it. SloppyMax what headers U ended up buying ?

got one of the first batches of hotshot headers. we had to toy with them a little but overall nothing out of the ordinary.

You can get a 'test pipe' from Budget for about $25. I am expecting delivery of test pipe, b-pipe and resonator to connect to stock muffler. I have a Y-pipe and O2 simulator. I'll let you know how loud it ends up, but I'm told it's gonna still be pretty quiet.

SHHHHH! Here comes the sleeper!

BTW, a single O2 simulator from o2sensorsimulator.com will 'patch' two O2 sensors for Cali spec guys (like you) because it has two sets of outputs. Costs $25. The other guys require you to buy two simulators.

Fat stainless steel thing. B-pipe is above. Tunes exhaust noise. Makes it 'throatier' and a bit quieter. Stuff available here .

Gutting your cat does absolutely nothing for power.... the max allowable pressure on a cat is 1-2 psi. Backpressure helps to not burn exhasut valves. You won't see a difference. Look up the specs if you don't believe me.

I must agree with Wildman. The cat is not that restrictive, and it probably won't even be the most restrictive element in your exhaust setup if you want your exhaust to be even remotely quiet and non-ricey.

i would agree that the stock cat is not much of a restriction but it is still more restrictive than a test pipe. i replaced mine last night with a warpspeed testpipe but it was the only stock piece left in the entire exhaust besides the muffler which i am not changing. the stock cat may not very restrictive but the fastest NA and FI guys either use testpipes or free flow cats in a few cases.

just use a resonated b pipe, test pipe, and stock muffler and you will have a car that sounds sporty yet refined like mine

If you're using aftermarket headers, and a test pipe, doesn't that eliminate ALL of the cats? Can you still pass emissions?

you cannot pass without the main cat unless you know someone that is willing to put their license on the line. i had the main cat in place and i passed emissions by a fairly large margin in charlotte, nc which is very strict for the southeast. edit- only resonated testpipe i have seen is at custommaxima.com.

I'm all for making more power, but I'm too lazy to go swapping out my main cat for a test pipe every time I go for emissions testing (yeah, I know it's not that often).

What do you guys plan to do? Swap the pipe for emissions or bribe the tester?

Here in IL, they only do the ECU check for codes, if you have no codes you are good to go. I aint got a single cat on. CustomMaxima.com sells resonated test pipes, I had one on my car, and it was good. I am going to get another one cause the Warpspeed one makes my Greddy a bit too raspy for my taste.

i plan to swap the stock cat for the once a year emission testing here. i think since i still have the stock muffler and an 18" glasspack that i am not hearing the raspiness that the warpspeed testpipe might cause in other conditions like blackbirdvq is mentioning.

The precats are by far way more restrictive than the main cat.. If a performance mod is what you are looking for gut the precats.

sloppymax, if you don't have any cats, run headers or Ypipe with Greddy, you will get a little bit of raspiness, its not bad and doesn't sound like a Honda or 4 cylinder but it has this weird distinctive VQ sound to it. I don't really like it, I'm changing the Greddy out to something else soon, have not decided what yet (JIC, FrankenCar, Cattman). And I'm going to see what it sounds like with custommaxima test pipe (resonated) and Warpspeed one (straight pipe).
