Keep and mod my VG or go for a VQ35?

Hi guys,
Thanks for the replies on the recent posts. I've been trying to decide what to do with my car, an '89 GXE Auto. I really love the car - Dig Dash, Auto Climate Cntrl, HUD, Sonar Suspension, Bose, Low Mileage (66K)- but it needs some work to get it back to spec, and I want to really mod it nice. The only real issue is the power thing. I know mtcookson has done the turbo thing, so I was thinking to do that also in the future, but I wonder if starting out with the VQ35 motor which has almost 100 more ponies might be better (looking at 2002 SE 6spd) so eventually I could go FI with that for even more power. I'm looking at the future investment here. Of course, the 2002 would cost more money now for just the car, and my '89 would be less than $1G to fix up nice back to spec.

I guess what I'm asking is should I stick with the 3rd gen and mod it later with turbo, internall engine work, etc; possibly do a VE/5spd swap; or just go for the newer more powerful 2002 SE now?

I'm sure it will take some time (and $ ;-) to make up my mind.

Thanx,

Mrkanda

P.S. How do you access all those cool funny faces, etc.?

It all depends on what you want out of your car and if you have the extra money.

Personally if I had the money I would get the 2002.

You said investment and car in the same sentence, thats a big no-no

As for the smilies, they are right over there --->

Then you can click the more button at the bottom for more.
You wont see them if you use the quick reply, but otherwise they are on the right and you can just click them and they will show up in the message

if you put in the work and $$ the 89 can be as fast or faster than the 2k2 and should be almost new if you do it right. It depends on if you like to do the work or not.

Well let's see. A decent 2002 will cost what? $13 grand or so? Do you have that kind of $ to spare?

If you can afford the 2002, get it. An 89 is still a 16 year old car, even with the low miles. You are crippled by the fact that it has an auto tranny (the early weaker version I might add). If you are serious about having a fast car, go with the 2002.

I will have the $ in a couple months. The issue for me is I want to drive something fun, nice, and powerful now. I currently have the 160hp VG with Auto tranny, so performance wise it is lackluster. It rocked 4 years ago when I got it and I still do love it, but the bar has been raised and I'm comparing it now to the seat-of-the-pants dyno I experienced in a recent test-drive of the new Altima SE-R. WOW! So, basically, I would love the project of Maxin'out my current Max, but I'm afraid it would take years and tons of $ to get it to a level I could just buy outright with a 2002+. Anyway, still in the planning stages...

Thanks again for the thoughts, guys

P.S. When you said the smilies are over there ---->
what did you mean? I don't see any drop down menues or icons or anything.

Personally I like the body of the 3rd gen much more then the 5th. Also depends on what you want the exterior to look like.

the only way youd get your GXE to perform like an 02 6spd would be turbo + 5spd which at the minimum if you did all the work yourself id say would cost you 3000$ plus any other mantanece so what ever you want

the 02 would be alot more reliable to unless you replaced every where item on your car which would be expensive
