Wierd Auto Tranny issue (again)
Wierd Auto Tranny issue (again)
When I drive with my engine cold my tranny shifts perfectly and what not. But as soon as it warms-up to proper operating temp (after about 5-10mins of being at that temp) my tranny will sometimes just go into neutral and then it'll shift into first after about 6 seconds of pressing the gas. I need a new front motor mount which is being put on tomorrow and it started happening as soon as the mount broke. More than likely it's out the door again but is there any hope for this tranny. The thing I don't understand is that everytime I drive highway then come to a stop after downshifting from my final gear it disengages. City driving it never does this unless I go higher than second gear. I also noticed if I throw the tranny into reverse then back into drive it engages. I'm thinking it's a linkeage but I'm leaning torward the option of time to buy a new max and screw the auto.
The same thing happened to my tranny a couple of times; I found this kit to fix the issue along with some others, but I have not purchased it since it has not happened again since a long time. It happened the last summer (I live in Mexico summer is too hot), so I’ll install a tranny cooler before next summer to see if the issue is solved otherwise I’ll try the kit.
This kit is for the RE4F02A or the RL4F02A transmission.

probably the solenoid pac.
Nah my tranny's a gonner. I went to emissions and it couldn't even go over 13 mph and the guy doing the testing got stuck half way up the ramp (very small incline at that). THat's after getting my mount and other things done. I did pass with flying numbers but it's time for me to save and get a 5 speed (any car for now until I can find a VE5 in my area)
I saw a manual tranny for 400 but I will need to find basically someone whose parting out to give me all other parts but the tranny. My mother want's to put a third auto in the car but I have to beat her to the punch and basically spend like 4 days straight putting this thing in. BTW when are you gonna finish the write-up on your cardomain.

Its your starved solenoids as automator said. But do throw it away, its all yours...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Most people try first:
U can take batt cable off first. Then TCU connector and flood it with electronics contact cleaner (as well as the ECU contacts). Dry well. Then clean and add contact grease on the connector pins sitting on the tranny, and the solenoids connector going into tranny (front). Btw. Do this to all contacts under hood...

see also: http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/748507/14
--------------------
The solenoid resistances may be measured, on the tranny side, connector opened:
Its got eight pins, numbered the same as in TCU connector.
Tranny side connector pins from left to right, top row first:
1 | 6 | 8 | 7
5 |W |W |none
Resistances measured to ground:
Line pressure. 1 to gnd = 2.5 -5 ohms
Torque converter. 5 to gnd = 10 -20 ohms
Shift solenoid valve A. 6 to gnd = 20 -40 ohms
Shift solenoid valve B. 7 to gnd = 20 -40 ohms
Timing 8 to gnd = 20 -40 ohms
Fluid Temp. W measured against W = 2.5K Ohms Cold
Be happy, Dont worry.

No offense taken. But what would be a good electronic connector cleaner? My dad said I can use alcohol. Plus I really don't want to have to drive with the way the tranny is acting.

There are spray bottles for this connector cleaning job in electronics shops [maybe radioshock?]. Dedicated spray bottle is better as the liquid comes out with pressure, and contain additives to loosen dirt. I just got hold of CRC !electronics! industrial cleaner product. Anyways, do not use the std car-spray as it leaves residue that collects dust.
The cleaning should be non abrasive as the layer on the pins is only microns thick.
Well I did apply a little alcohol and it made a HUGE difference. I am going to get the spray later today after I pickup my check. I didn't even do all of the connectors just the ones under the hood. It did stay in third for about two or three seconds then it shifted into first. I'm guessing my grounds should now be upgraded and I am going to do all of my engine connectors now. Thanks again for all of your help.
EDIT: My excuse to my parents to get me a five speed parts car just went out the door.

The VGE autotranny is excellent - after this cleanup. Terriblese before...
Its funny: everybody here has manuals and want auto. Cost question... There vice versa! Humans never satisfied on what they have... well, manual is more accurate, but whata nuisance pumpdown with the clutch if u drive a lot in town.
Clean ECU & TCU connectors also, beside gas pedal...
Adding micro tips contact grease to pins extends connector life cycle.
Another update: After much praise the tranny locked up in neutral today after a 20 minute highway drive (under 70mph constant). So new look is me not having a car for a while (I was going to register it today but I'm not going to spend the money on something that isn't moving) I am now in the market for a 5 speed maxima.
