Painting chrome trim on roof
Has anyone thought about painting the chrome strips running down the top of the car? I never really liked the fact that they are chrome. Can someone photoshop it so it looks body-colored?
The only two folks I have seen post here about having done this were both onyx SE drivers. One sanded and painted the chrome strips to match the car color, and the other used black vinyl tape of some kind.
Both seemed pleased with their handiwork at the time, and I haven't seen this mentioned again since last spring.

Try a product called "Blackout Tape" made by Trimbrite. Available at most auto parts stores. Would look good on your Onyx Max. Just have to wait until it's above 60 degrees to do it.
I would go with matching paint. It's in an area where there is not a lot of risk of chipping from flying road debris. I would say that you'd be okay with paint if the surface was properly prepared (sanded)

I would also suggest that if you paint it that you add the compound to the paint that makes it flex (similar to bumber paint) - that way if you have to remove the strip to replace the front windshield, you at least have a chance to do so without the paint falliung off the trim / weatherstripping. Just my $.02 worth - good luck!

I guess it all boils down to personal taste. I am just not into chrome, at least for this car. It just always seem to stand out and look a bit out of place for me.

my thoughts exactly
you confused me for a sec. I thought one of your admirers joined until I realized your sig was exactly the same.
I've seen pics of a fully modded Onyx on here before. All the chrome was non-existent including the strips. I like some chrome though. But it sounds like it's a great mod for you.
i painted all the chrome trim peices around my windows on my 4th gen. had it for about 3 years with no chips. (sold the car). what i did, was tape everything off around the windows with blue painters tape, cleaned it with alcahol, sprayed it with a few light coats of bulldog adhesive promoter, (comes in a blue can, looks like spray paint) , used a heat gun in between coats, then sprayed it with flat black flexible bumper and trim paint (multiple light coats). also used a heat gun in between coats. came out looking factory and lasted without chipping for as long as i had the car. i use to go through car washes with it too. both paints i got a pep-boys. if you want pics i might be able to find some and email them to ya. imo, its not worth taking them off the car to do.. cause its too much work, they never go back on rite, and you stand a big risk of chipping or cracking the paint while your doin it.. if your gonna take em off the car, you might as well go get them powder coated then.
More info on that black Max at this site: http://www.freshalloy.com/site/cars/...pts/home.shtml Its the Street Concepts Project Maxima.
