Interesting Tail lights on ebay

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33716

Check the link, found this on ebay. Not my auction but undecided yet on whether they look good or rice LoL. I think they look ok, also wondering if any org members know what the person did to get that look. I have regular 00 GXE lights and wanted to do something different to them. Or mebbe paint the black for the SE look. But this looks like an interesting project, cuz I'm not paying 150 for them. Just wondering if anyone knows what they did. Thanks.

You mean these?

This is a has been discussed several before... if you have to worry about cops... these are a bad idea, since they are blatantly illegal because they do not reflect red...

I just think these tail lights are butt ugly and there's almost no amt of money anyone could pay me to put em on my car...

To answer your questions... I don't know what they did to get em like that... I'd say just tint/paint your red tails...

I don't know if the customenterprise ones are the same, I'm not sure, they have similarities, but hm....... either the picture is deceiving, because they seem different to me for some reason, maybe he black the clear ones out or something, but on the ebay pictures for some reason, it sticks out to me, giving a different look you kno. I just wanted to maybe be a little different and stand out a little. And I don't think they're that ugly, I think the ones that stillen makes are a lot worse LoL

they might look that way due to the flash being reflected back into the camera

You can do that with regular 5.5 gen tails I believe... don't have to go buy these... unless ya wanna keep the stock ones for when ya sell the car or something...

Could ya show me a link or something that says they're DOT approved... I'd like to see that. They may seem legal at night, but during the day all tail lights are supposed to reflect red and amber or just red.

wrong.

any modification to the taillights or headlights is not DOT Approved. Does it have a stamp from the Department of Transportation on them? If so, take pics and I will admit I was wrong.

You are 100% correct Anuj and those tails are NOT DOT approved. I contacted a seller a while back on ebay about those and he told me they were not.

I would almost guarantee the box will say the same thing the box for clear side markers says. Something along the lines of "for show use only." They must reflect red to be deemed "legal". Not SHINE red.

just because the housing they used says DOT on them doesn't mean that they didnt just clear out the original tail lights that were in there and put in the clears.

or you could just admit i was right, that would work too. i didn't just clear out se tails, these are from custom maxima. and you can tell by the black on the se lights and these lights that they are not the same.

i wasn't the one that said you were wrong to begin with and i am still highly doubtful that a tail light that's not red and has no red reflector is approved by the DOT. i'm going to have to do some research when i get home tonight.

i didn't think they were legal orignally either. i didn't even notice the DOT mark until i went to get my car inspected. they passed my car with those tails on it and told me about the DOT mark. that's enough legality for me.

i passed inspection with the tails on, i've never been pulled over for them, and there is a DOT stamp on them....what more do you guys want?

the tails aren't on your car, so why do you care so much about this?

They must just be legal in your state then because I have a friend that is a police officer and he just told me that if there is no red reflector, not bulb, they are illegal.

that's what i've been trying to tell him all along but i doubt that they can be legal in just his state seeing as how the DOT is a federal agency. atleast i think it is...

i think it comes down to the fact that it says "DOT" on the bottom. it might not seem like it would/should be legal and cops might even pull people over for having them. but bottom line....the Department of Transportation deemed the tails LEGAL in the U.S.

And I'm certain they're illegal here in NJ, DOT-Approved or not. (I wont even go into how ugly they are. 00-01 Maximas have the best looking tail lights, IMHO.)

I have them on my car and a cop was behind me on several occasions day and night and have not been pulled over maybe because it's not worth pulling me over or maybe cuz he's right and they are legal....

if i'm a manufacturer i can put DOT on my tail lights so people think they're DOT approved but that doesn't mean they're legal.

I found this... even though its from Texas, it's a federal standard:

Clear tail lamp lenses utilizing red bulbs which do not meet SAE standard J585e, (September 1977) are not in compliance with federal standards (NHTSA, 49 CFR 571.108). Under §547.3215, this standard has been adopted by Texas and therefore it is in violation of Texas law; §547.322; §547.325; and is punishable as a class C misdemeanor under §547.004(a)(3).

Continued...

The Texas Transportation Code § 547.101 allows for the adoption of rules and standards regarding vehicle equipment to protect the public and enforce safety standards. §547.3215 requires Texas to use the federal standard contained in 49 CFR 571.108 or the standards in effect at the time the vehicle was manufactured, unless prohibited by statute, for the lighting and reflective devices. Tail lamps are required by §547.322 and must emit a red light plainly visible at a distance of 1,000 feet from the rear of the vehicle. In addition to the lamps required in Chapter 547, reflectors are required by §547.325. These reflectors must be visible at night from 100 to 600 feet (100 to 350 feet for a pre-1972 vehicle) when directly in front of lawful lower beams of headlamps. Section 547.303 requires these reflectors on the rear of the vehicle and must be or reflect red.
