I want to replace my armrest console (between the seats) with a newer Maxima part, one which has the improved cupholder section. Was it starting with '97 where this was introduced? Did it change at all up through '99? Has anyone already done this and have tips on the fit (perfect or slight mod needed?) and what it costs?

I still can't get over how Nissan goofed on the design of this important convenience piece. Quite a few cup/can sizes don't fit snug in it--I have to use a stress ball to help avoid spillage.

 

i have 1997 gle and have this stuff on my car, but frankly those cup holders do not hold standrad size cup of cofee well, it becomes loose inside and when u reach 15 mph or more a spillage occurs.

so point is that it is not worth for you to do this upgrade.

 

I replaced my 96 console with a 98. Absolutely no problem in terms of fit. I believe the storage area underneath the armrest is a little smaller, but other than that no huge difference. The cup holders are now, a specific size because they are round...but I didn't use them much for cup holding so don't really mind the change.

 

I wonder if there's an aftermarket part you can attach that will help improve the drink holding capability. Or maybe on the '99 there is a better design?
