newb troubles with wiring

ok, so i went to install a new shift **** today, and it wanted to be plugged into the gauge cluster power source, so it would light up when my headlights are on. no biggie, but i figured, any ol lpower source would work, and i dont exactly know how id go about routing the wiring all the way to the gauge cluster, so i wired it into the defroster light, and... **** no worky, so i figured maybe that just dont have enough juice to power the ONE led in that thing, so i spliced into the cig lighter, and still no dice. so i guess what i wanna know is, is there really a way this thing could tell the difference (wattage/amperage) between either of the aforementioned power sources and the gauge cluster, or is it just not working. and also, if it is just picky, where would i find a good + power source from the gauge cluster that wouldnt require to totally mutilate my entire dash? thatnks for any and all help.

yeah, thanks, im thinking maybe i just chose a crappy grounding point. at first i used one of the screws that holds all the sterio and whatnot into the dash, then when i changed to cig lighter, i used the black wire on the cig lighter, and by the way, the fuse is fine cuz the cig lighter still works. anyone else? or is this thing just busted... cuz that would **** me off, it was new in box and all.

Ground --> you can use the front bolt for the pass seat, if nothing else.

power source --> Fuse box The cig lighter should have worked though
