I just had it done...

Mine wasn't leaking, but your Haynes Manual is a good place to start. It is wrong, however, on the single most important aspect of the change-out: You DON'T need to remove the engine support cross-member to access the rack-and-pinion. Relying on this tidbit of information caused me to have it done professionally; the mechanic told me that it was unnecessary to remove the cross-member. You can do this job yourself if you are mechanically inclined within 4-5 hours I believe. If your rack needs replacing, get a remanufactured 1999 Max SE rack, which should out-perform any other rack you could put in.
Part+labor cost me about $650.

Good luck finding a better price for a remanufactured rack

Wow! thats a good tidbit of information since that was also stopping me from attemting that project myself. I work at a dealership so I will try to get a 99 rack for a really good price. Why did you replace yours if it wasn't leaking?

best way to get the seal out is fill up the PS. start the car and turn it in one direction. When you put them back in make sure the seal faces up.

Actually Rich, we didn't completely remove the cross-member but it was necessary to unbolt the left side of the cross-member and lower it about 3 inches in order to get the rack out. Another problem to watch out for, which we ran into on your car was the power steering lines. They are in a really tight spot and all you need is one fitting to bind up. There is no room for elbow grease to get them free.
