maybe dumb idea, maybe not: turn rear ashtray into heat/ac vent for people in the back

i've always hated having an ashtray on the back of my 95 console. i had thought about putting a cup holder in there somehow, but never got around to it or found one that would really fit. my gf's chevy prizm has a cup holder in the back, but it's much wider and would go in too deep to really fit. plus i haven't been able to find one in the junkyard and will not pay dealer cost.

anyways, i was thinking, aren't there tubes/vents under the driver and passenger seat? maybe i can reroute or irrigate(if i can use the word like that when it's not about water) to the back of the console. i was thinking i have an extra (two really) dash vent so i'd be able to control if it was open/closed + left/right. the vent is very similar in size/shape to the ash tray so i could just cut a little and mount it there and connect it to the tubes from the floor.

have you ever had people in the back say "crank the AC i can't feel it!" or "turn the heat up it's cold back here" and it been too hot or cold up front and wished they had their own closer vent? well this might answer that problem.

not really a must have mod that you can brag about, but a different but functional mod.

any suggestions or comments? think i'm crazy, wasting my time, maybe just bored or just stupid? ok enough

I don't have a rear ashtray in my 99 SEL.

Sounds like a good idea though

either run a smaller tube from under the dash under the whole console, or i'll have to figure out how to cut the side of the console where it still hides in between the seat. i'm not sure exactly yet, but i think it can be done and without looking ghetto. i'll have to look at it some more this weekend.

Sounds like too much work for very little benefit. Rear climate control in a sedan is not nearly as useful as in a big suv. My mom has it on her 04 deville, but no one that ever sits in the back has had a need for it. Then again the back doesn't see a lot of use anyway. Pretty much a gimmick if you ask me, but if you really want it then go for it.

Do you often have rear passengers, and do they often complain that it's too hot or too cold?? *LOL* I think the cost/benefit ratio isn't there. Newer cars have that, but we can't upgrade everything in our old cars, just isn't cost effective, like xenons, auto dimming mirror, led lamps, indy rear susp, heated wiper nozzles and windshield, etc. If one wants those things that badly, save up for a new car that has them....my .02.

If you use the 'lower' mode of air flow there are two vents under the front seats that point to the rear.. it might help dunno never had that problem

that lower vent was the one i was originally talking about. i don't think it would be all that much work, but then again it was just an idea and gets rid of that nasty ash tray. it would be functional and useful for some people...and not so much for others. nothing wrong with new ideas that make your car more up-to-date...

god girls always complain about the heat.
explain to those who are in the back seat there is a reason they are sitting in the back.
adding heat to the back of your max....why? you would have less heat up front then...it would be alot more work then it would be worth...also you would have to throw the ait duck through the center console....good luck.

The end of the driver's side floor vent in my 1996 has about a 2" diameter end on it. I assume you could attach a regular plastic tube onto it and route it through the middle console?

My floor heat never seems to work very well. Seems like the piping isn't there.

ha not really an investment if all i needed was 2 feet of pvc pipe and some trimming with a dremmel. like i said, some like it, some think it's a waste, it's just an idea. i don't think i'll ever go crazy and put lots of effort into it. was just one of those ideas that popped into my head and doesn't seem too difficult and kills two birds with one stone.

Your car should already have this under the seat. Caddys and Olds does the same thing. They pipe a section to the console from the 'floor' pipes.

When you select floor on the switch, the rear gets air too. Or BiLevel for the AC.

come on man you cant be serious!! were not SUV's where the people in the back need their own heating, lol. The floor vents are more than plenty, but if your friends cant deal tell them to take their own car then.

I have ridden in a a few Maxs with open headers or open cat and I can tell you that your feet get warm. I am not sure if that is the "luxurious" solution you were looking for. Oh well, those girls will just complain about the noise then. There is no pleasing people.
