PICS of my strange leak...help plz

I have had a few previous posts about this strange leak coming from my car. I have taken pictures and posted them. Please tell me what you think it may be. A mechanic told me that it may be an axle seal leak. I've also been told that it may be diff. bearings. Please help. http://community.webshots.com/script...ecurity=yBPJeW

If your axle seals are leaking, it is almost positively the bearings in the tranny putting extra stress on the seal. This will happen again if you only replace the seal. Without seeing the leak, I'm almost positive that it's your tranny. I thought that was the overwhelming concensus on the other thread?

Well this might have to be a matter of process of elimination. Have you had to refill any of your fluids...Anything....Power stering, brake, antifreeze, oil? Its not red, so i think it is safe to say that it's not trans fluid.

Yep - check 'em all - it's the easy way for sure. Might be color blind, but it kinda looks like old ATF to me - not ruby red like the new stuff mind you. I'd say start there... YMMV

Tallica62,
What kind of max do you have 5 speed or Auto? Check your fluids!!
Also is the fluid greasy to the touch?

He doesn't have an auto, he has a 5 speed. He's in denial -- many people have told them what is almost 99% positive, the tranny is gone. I guess you can check Eldinhasamax's old situation, maybe you have a loose bolt, but I'm sorry it's probably not.

i admit i am in somewhat of denial...hoping its not my tranny. I had my tran. fluid refilled today, but its still leaking. The mech. said its an axle seal leak, but i have read that a seal leak will keep reoccuring b/c of the shot bearings.
The fluid is greasy to the touch btw...it is somewhat thick...not real watery

If it is my tranny...what are my options? Am i looking at gettin a new tranny? About how much will that run me? $1000?

you can look on car-part.com to search junk yards around your area. Obviously, If you're going this route, look for a 98-01 5 spd. to aviod the bearing problems. However, if you rebuild the one you have, and get on the shop to shim the bearings correctly, then you'd know that it will be fault free. It's going to be expensive unfortunately. Good luck with what you do, hopefully you have a friend in the auto business, or someone on the org near you will help you out.
