Did I do something wrong with my brakes?
Did I do something wrong with my brakes?
I replaced the rear pads today on my '96 and the pedel seems very soft and travels to far. I bled the lines and that helped a little but they still dont feel right. Im not sure if i bled them right tho. Should the car be running when its done? Also the haynes book says to disconect the abs actuator, not sure were that is so i just took the fuse out for the abs. Im not sure if new pads need some breaking in time or mabye do i need to adjust the brake booster. Any help is greatly appricated. thank you

I bled one caliper at a time (due to not having jack stands) with the car off. i then tried it with the car on. both times with the abs fuse out. the haynes book says to disconect the abs actuators, but i dont know where they are, so i didnt. both times about 1 tablespoon of brake fluid came out of each caliper.

You couldn't have bled them correctly if only 1 tablespoon came out.
Do this, and have a buddy help you. Car off, you don't need to do anything to your ABS system. Put a vacuum hose on the end of the bleeder valve on the caliper and point the end into some sort of can. Have your buddy put his foot down hard on the brake pedal. Open the bleed valve, fluid will come out and the brake pedal should go to the floor, then close the bleed valve BEFORE YOU LET GO OF THE BRAKE PEDAL. Once the valve is closed, have your buddy release the pedal. Repeat this about 5x per side. Make sure you have plenty of fluid in the master cylinder.
EDIT: Also make sure the notches on the caliper piston are lined up with the nub on the rear pads. The piston notches should be lined up to 12 o'clock, 3, 6 and 9. Like a plus sign +
