How do you know if your engine mount are bad?

Is there any way to tell if your engine mounts are bad? I am getting a weird popping noise under the engine when load is placed on the engine and released. For example, when I shift a gear and disengage the clutch it pops or if I press the gas hard and release it quickly I hear the noise. It isn't anything suspension related I know, rather something in the drivetrain. The only thing I can think of is that one of my engine mounts is bad. The car does feel like it has a little more "play" when starting off from a stop and shifting gears.

It rattles and the car shakes pretty badly, in lower gears particularly. Had it happen to me in my 3rd Gen about a two years ago when I had the tranny replaced for the second time. After changing the engine mounts, it was like I had a whole different ride! They're not cheap to replace either, so be prepared to shell out some $$$ for labor unless you're skilled enough to pull this off yourself...

Good luck

with car in drive, and foot on break. the car will shake. when you put in neutral it will stop shaking as bad.

yeah i'm sure its your motor mounts....what kind of noise is it? mine did a clicking noise everytime I let off the throttle while in gear......my rear motor mount was shot like crazy....

anyway one other way u can test to see if your motor mounts are shot....have a friend stand in front of your car with the hood open....put it in first or reverse....and start rolling....then ask your your friend if they hear a noise and if its coming from the engine mounts....

Or if you have access to jack/stands....then just go under the car and see for yourself....if the rubber inside the motor mount is tearing....then replacement is needed

Steven, you replaced yours with Energy Suspension ones correct? If so how much did those run you, and did you install yourself?

Another thing that can make clicking noise that mine did is the support bracket that held my right front axle broke and everytime i'd tap on the gas it would click fairly loud. getting that fixed at the moment. Caused the axle to break the seal in the transfer case and it started leaking tranny fluid.

I had my mechanic do the install....it's really easy....I could have done it myself, but he had the tools....plus I wanted to support his new business....and to bring some business in....I let him do the install....while the motor mounts were off my car....we took it to a shop that charged me $35 to press out the old ones....no torching was required...the shop had the right press adapter to fit over the old mounts....so labor was fairly easy for them....

What bracket are you talking about? Are you talking about the 3 bolts that hold the axle in on the passenger side? I had the axles out a while back, so maybe something is loose.
