350-400 miles per tank, mostly highway driving.

Miles per tank doesn't tell us much, since some people fillup when they hit 1/4 tank, and others wait until the needle drops below the E.

The more important statistic is miles per gallon. Reset your trip odometer every time you fillup and divide the total trip odometer miles by gallons purchased to get miles per gallon. The general consensus here is that in the city, the Maxima gets dismal mileage, something like 15MPG. On the highway, it is in the mid 20's.

It's normal. I get around 20MPG overall as well, with 50/50 highway/city driving. I think those who are getting like 30MPG on the freeway must be doing 55MPH.

I'm getting, consistently, at least 420. I do city and highway driving. More highway, than city. 99 GXE

fwiw, i average about 21mpg with a mixture of city (philly *ugh* - anyone else here call the surekill "highway" driving?!) and backroads. My latest highway trip netted an average of about 27mpg...

I just had a fill-up and I am at half a tank (210 miles) so far. This is by far the highest I have hit at half a tank. I will see how many more miles I can tack on before reaching empty. If my estimates are correct, I should have about 420 miles +. I will calculate the mpg next time I fill-up. I drive mostly highway throughout the week M-F 50 miles a day round trip.

Actually "half tank" on the fuel guage is misleading. Ever notice how the first half of the guage moves very slowly and the second half falls faster than a rock in water? The way I estimate is that I get 2/3 of my miles on the first half, and 1/3 on the second half of the guage.

I have been getting over 25 mpg, lots of city or at least 75 (up to 140) on highway. since I just got the car not too long ago, I've been accelerating a lot! I've been quite pleased with the gas mileage (was driving a 83 Ford Crown Victoria before...BAD GAS MILEAGE).

Where in atlanta? I drive i 285 to ga 400, just about everyday and I'm still getting my good 400+ miles. Don't short change on the gas either, that has a whole lot to do with it.

I'm originally from Chicago also. If you do not have a car in Atlanta, Marta won't get you there. CTA will take you anywhere. Hey, what type of gas do you put in you max?

I just filled it for the second time since I got it. 2 tanks, ~80% hw miles, LOTS of ~cough~cough~ testing of the gas pedal under extreme pressure and I'm at about 21mpg avg.

It also depends on if you have an auto or a 5sp...

The autos tend to get better on the freeway than the 5sp because they rev lower (i.e. about 2500 rpm at 70 vs. 5sp which is almost 3000rpm at 70)...

I believe the auto's have an overdrive, while the 5sp are true 5sp and not overdrive transmissions. The 5sp appear to be geared so that you hit top speed where the horsepower/torque curves meet.

All freeway, my parents 95 gle autos would get around 28-30.
Mostly freeway, my old 96 gxe auto got about 28.
Mostly freeway, my 97 se 5sp gets about 24-25.

Before I got the intake on my '97, i got 27. It probably has to do with how i've changed my driving habits so that i hear the intake more!!!

My '96 SE auto gets 26-27mpg on 93 octane.

I am mostly city driving. I feel for you guys in the Chicago area, your gas prices are killer. I pay 1.73 for 93 here but I saw over 2.00 for you guys on the news.

hahahahaha... out here in Northern California, it's about $2.07 for regular.... and 91/92 octane is premium, not 93! (at about $2.27/gallon!)

better get my o2 sensor fixed soon, i think that may be why my mpg has gone down too!

There are three o2 sensors on these cars ('95 and up) and they aren't cheap. Pepboys wanted 220 bucks to replace them on mine. I got mad and decided to take it to the dealer. Found out that the o2 sensors were covered under the emissions warrenty and they replaced them for free.

Thanks for the advice... I'll give them a call... But with over 130,000 miles on the clock, I don't think they'll be 'too' willing

Two overdrives

The 4Gen Maxima 5-speed transmission is a true 5-speed transmission. It has 5 forward gears. It is also a true overdrive transmission. In fact, the manny tranny actually has two overdrives! Both 4th and 5th are overdrive ratios. These are the actual gear ratios, taken from the factory service manual:

1st 3.250
2nd 1.850
3rd 1.272
4th 0.954
5th 0.795

Thanks for the clarification. What I was referring to was the fact that many vehicles do not hit top speed in 5th gear, but 4th gear. Their 5th gears are setup so that you get optimum gas mileage, and it drops the rpm's to around 2500 or so around 60mph. Whereas sports minded cars are setup so that top gear at top speed is approximateliy where the peaks of torque and hp curves.

On a side note, I wish Nissan used different ratios for some of the gears. Ideally, I would like to see:

1st 3.0
2nd 1.85
3rd 1.272
4th 0.9
5th 0.7 or even 0.65

Either that, or a 6th gear with 0.6 ratio. If I'm not mistaken, the manual tranny has been a carryover for the most part for at least 10 years.

umm

I get around 12-13 miles per gallon, city or highway.. doesn't even matter. 1 roadtrip was all highway cruising and I got 210 miles on the tank, from the TOP till the light turned on.
After replacing sparks, fuel + air filter, running injector/fuel system cleaner, cleaning coolant Temp sensor, replacing O2 sensor and Fuel pressure regulator.... I am now heading for my 7 month high, which is expected to be around 240 miles on a FULL tank. I drove 124 miles so far, and I'm exactly in the middle of the gauge... When the light turns on I should have over 230.. after hundereds of $$ invested into fixing the problem I can get nearly 15 miles per gallon! mixed highway and city driving in NYC. wow!

gee I wonder how it feels like to drive a whole week without filling up! I drive around 250-300 miles a week.

Hey guys -- long time no write for me. I just moved to VA and have been without computer for two months .

My 95 auto gets about 22 mpg around town and I consistently hit 30 on all-highway runs. That's crusing at 75 mph, too. BTW, I used mid-grade gas (89 octane) ONE time 5 years ago and my mileage dropped by 3 mpg. ONE tank. I run nothing but premium since.

Maybe my driving habit has changed due to the skyrocketing gas price in Norther Cal, my average has graudally increased from 21mpg to 24mpg in the past 4 months.
