timing belt replacement
timing belt replacement
1994 maxima GXE 116K miles. 64k on timing belt. do i need to replace belt now or can i wait longer.
i know the recommendation is 60 k miles.
my mechanic recommends changing the belt on my toyota camry every 90-100k miles.
i do not work on the maxima myself.

I would do it now, yes they have been known to hold out for a long time, but if it does go you are looking at replacing head and pistons maybe whole motor depending on speed of engine when it goes...... be sure to do the water pump while you are in there.....
The 94 and late 93 had a design change from square tooth timing belts (60K) to the round tooth belts (105K). If someone really did change your belt early and you know it has 64K on it then you have about 41K miles left. You're fine.
car was recalled with 52k miles on it. dealer recommended changing timing belt then because all i had to pay for was the belt. why would the dealer recommend changing the belt if it was good for over a 100k miles?
rubber cracks over time, timing belts are recommended to be replaced every 7 years regardless of mileage due to age cracks making the belt prone to breaking
It's true, they do say that. However I didn't change the timing belt on my 2001 Nissan Quest (same belt) until earlier this year (14 years 133K) and the same with my 2001 Toyota Camry (14 years, 92K, belt was supposed to be replaced at 90K). With 90-105k belts these days it's more likely that belt will reach its "rated age" long before its mileage rating. Ive never heard of a belt breaking before its rated miles, but I suppose it's possible. Gotta be one in a million.
Unless you like doing the job twice. Once you do the belt just replace the water pump as well. Why aggravate yourself on doing the same job more than once?
I did the water pump and timing belt at 90k and at 105k, the thermostat went and was stuck open so the car never warmed up in the winter and got crap mileage. The OEM Nissan thermostat was only around $21 from the dealer. Do the thermostat, too.
