Auto Trans Failure or Valve Body Problem???

Hi, 98, GLE, 166K, perfect mechanically, but started a 500 mile trip last week, had some hard start hard stop inner city driving, drove the rest of the way 85 mph. About 30 degrees outside, cruise control most of the way. Got home and got a hard hard hard 1/2 shift and a pretty jarring 2/3 shift. Is this indicative of needing the vb upgrade I've read about or should I just go to a junkyard and flop out $750 for a 50K used trans?

Thanks,

crsdsabers

Did you check the fluid? When was the last time you did a flush?

I checked the fluid after a very minor leak following axle replacement. Have kept a good eye on it and all is ok. I bought it 13 months ago at 120K miles. It was flushed at 110K, 90% of my miles in 4th gear, cruise at 85, I 64 EB. Not much hot rodding around Ft Leonard Wood....

Thanks,

Jeff

sounds like your fluid is low or a drop resistor failure? na i doubt it. go with the new tranny, no need to put anymore beating on that old tranny.

Constantly, if I ease off the acc, the shift isn't so hard, but it's slamming into 2nd gear every time.

test the drop resistor first and check your fluid level.

Hopefully it's your dropping resistor. It's on the inner body right next to the air box. I believe it should measure approx. 10 Ohms.
