Best battery for CCA & an aftermarket stereo

I'm essentially looking for a battery that can handle the demands of a long cold winter in Vermont, and can support an aftermarket stereo with amp.

I also like to listen to my stereo with the car off, so a battery that can provide me with that luxury would be great too.

What do you cold weather, stereo guys use for batteries?

Thanks.

I think the optima battery are among the best. although my kragen 'autolite' battery served me just fine.

The Optima Red or Yellow?

I hear the Yellow is great for stereo's, but what about its cold weather start up power?

Think the Red will give me the best of both worlds?

just get the yellow, if you are from atlanta, i doubt your going to have to worry about cold weather power. I have a some pos battery and it starts fine and we have had a pretty cold winter in ny, Have had the battery for over 3 years now.

whoops missed part about vermont. But still you should be fine with yellow.

Red top is a cranking battery, Yellow is a deep cycle. I'd get the Red top for the Cold because it has higher cold cranking amps. During the winter here in Central Illinois, the red top hasn't failed me yet.

Please pardon my meatheadiness, but what is a deep cycle battery and how is it different from a cranking one?

def. go with a red top, i had a yellow and then got my hands on a red top and its a huge diference in cranking power and power all around, 900cca i think, you really dont need the yellow, its got more of a reserve capacity but the reds an all around better battery, i've got 2 power stage 1 12's, 1500bd and a kx650.4 with mb quarts and microvision screen, seperate dvd player and noens...all with out capacitor and my lights dont even dim

just my .02

You could just get a regular battery for under the hood and a seprate yellow top in the trunk for the system, get a battery isolator and add a switch to it that "adds the other battery in" when you hit it for just sitting and listening. Then you can hit it if you are going on the highway so the yellow top can recharge. I got an isolator off ebay for about $25 shipped.

The red top is your basic battery for using in a car. Typical charging all year long. The Yellow top is mainly used for seasonal applications, such as boats, and trolling motors, etc... which are constantly discharged almost fully and then recharged again. Thats where the deep cycle comes in. The yellow would do fine your car as well, but your going to pay more for it because of it's design.

ive got a yellow top. once i got one, i've talked my family into getting one for their cars. i run an aftermarket headunit, two audiobahn flame Qs, and lights dont dim one bit. and im here in frigid wisconsin where temperatures like 2 degrees is commonplace. i listen to my stereo in the summer while im ballin with the car off, and 1-2 hours later, the car cranks right up. never had experience with a red top, but yellow top has never let me or my family down, even with headlights left on for an extended period of time with the lights off

Blah. Just go to walmart and get a Everstart with the Yellow Case. They have 1000-1200 CCAs and a 3 year replacement warranty with a 5 year regular warranty.

59.99.

What's an Optima cost? 129?

Not true. A battery is a battery. You could spend $5000 and make your entire trunk one big custom battery. You will get 100,000 CCAs but your car will start and run the same.

Just because something costs more doesn't mean you need it.

but then the optima is a dry cell battery, which means it will last longer, and it also comes with a LIFETIME replacement warranty that i've never had to put to use in the 4 years i've had mine. you can mount it upside down and will it work just the same. not that you would mount it upside down, but you could.

ive had optima yellow tops on both maxima's ive owned. i have never had to get a jumpstart, cars never had trouble starting even on the coldest days. this is probably the only thing ive ever bought for the car, that never needed any attention at all. also, im running a pretty big system in the car, 2 class d amps, tv's, all that good stuff, and dont even have a cap for the system. never had a problem. another good thing about the optima's, they come with both side, and top terminals.. so you can use a set just for the car, and the other set just to power anything else you hook up. makes life alot easier if you wanna disconnect some things. i do have to agree with whoever said you get what you pay for. at about $180 the yellow top isnt cheap, but is by far the best and only maintence free battery ive ever owned

How do the red or yellows fit? Is it a plug and play, fit like a charm kinda deal, or are slight modifications needed to get em to fit right?

Heres a place with some info pertaining to deep cycle vs. regular battery that you might find useful. Copy and paste into your address bar. I don't know why it's not active.

My optima yellow top served me great (Minnesota winter) and it's rated at 700 or 750 CCA. It's a very nice battery for stereo upgrades.
