Does the part number for an airbag module matter?

I am in the process of buying an airbag module for my 95 maxima. I've noticed that there are several model number that share the 28556 number but have 53U00 or 41U00 behind it. I called my local nissan dealership and they said it was 28556-42U00. Does it really matter?

Yes, it matters a lot.

The part number changes every time the airbag system does.

-Model year
-With seatbelt pre-tensioners
-With seat side airbags

If you don't have the correct one for your features, you can never reset the system to operate properly.

How would you kow which one is the right one for your car? When I called the dealership, the guy didn't need my VIN # even though I asked him if it was needed. Would I need exact airbags for that specific module #? What would you recommend doing in my situation?

First of all, you need to talk to a dealer parts man who requests the VIN. My local dealer won't order a lugnut without it, and who can blame them? Nissan is notorious for mid-year changes in parts and specifications on their vehicles.
The VIN will tell the parts man what options your car was delivered with, making the possibility of getting the wrong part less likely.

Second, the number for your car should match the one currently installed.
