High Mileage - need your opinions

Guys,

I've found a couple of Max's for sale around me for what seem like pretty good deals. There's a 2003 6spd that i'm considering, and its at a local dealer, and they're asking 16,900 for it (loaded, leather, etc, no navigation, can't tell yet if it has HLSD).

I could probably knock another 1,000 off of it, but here's the catch. I'ts got 69,000 miles on it already. I want this car to last me a good long while, and i'm a little concerned. How long will the 5th gen Maximas go if they are taken care of?

Thanks

Highest mileage 5.5g is GBAUER (~105k) as far as I know, but his tranny just went, but he's auto. If you absolutey need a car right now, take it, but if you can wait, I would wait for a lower mileage car. Check NADA used value for that car w/ those options, as that price seems a bit high.

Do you have a TS ECU reflash to get to 7k?

That price is high.... you could get a 2002 with 6 speed and HLSD for with less than 40k miles for slightly more than that... but I think ya already knew that...

But in answering your question, it probably will last long assuming ya take good care of it.... then again, apart from George, I'm not sure if there are any others with mileage that high, 2002 or 2003....

Ahh, the Puppetmaster....you, my friend, i am keeping my eye on.

I've found another.....this may be what i do, since after driving one this weekend, i'm not sure i can wait until summer time......theres a 2002 with 40K on it, all leather, no meridian package, and no HLSD, but the asking price is too good to pass up (i think). And for a few hunderd, i could get the HLSD installed when it comes time to replace the clutch.

2002 SE, the clock just turned to 80K. Still running well, although something is definitely going awry with my front suspension. . . Other than that and some rotors, no problem. . . .

Its all good man.... like I already told ya... it also depends on my search for a good replacement... which at this point, has proved to be pretty futile.... but a 2002 with 40k is nice, and if you can get a good deal on it, even better... ya live in the south, so leather with no heated seats won't kill ya... and you're right... HLSD can always be added later....

Keep us updated and all the best... looking forward to having ya part of owners' circle soon....

Btw, I have a thread with some updated pics of my car here.

my 2k2 se 6spd hit the 43k mile ticker.... still running strong and can hit the 7k rpm mark.... no ecu flash or anything. basic mods are rear sway bar, front strut tower brace, sylvania silverstar hi-beam bulbs and el-cheapo k&n frameless intake mod. Had put some Kuhmo ecsta supras on since 10k miles....Craptenzas felt too unsafe...still has at least 3/4 of treadlife left, cause I rotate them every 5k miles...just front to back and vice versa, no criss-crossing...
About to put some power-slot and new brake pads in, even though stock pads still look good to go another 15 to 20k miles... I do mainly 2 plus hour highway driving in case you guys are wondering and also have a beater toyota pu truck for commuting to work to help explain the mileage...
The car has also been garaged for at least 3/4 of the time I've had it...
I'm considering getting a g35 6spd sedan so I may sell my max...

Yeah, found a 2k2 with 46,000 asking 14, 500, and figure i could probably get that down just below 14.

Only options its missing are the meridian package (heaterd seats and wheel) which i don't really care about, and HLSD, which i can add if needed.

I may go look at it this weekend.

My 2k2 6speed has 97k. No none problems, clean engine, interior is in great shape. I bought it at 89k for $12. I spin the tires through 1st and chirp them through 2nd. I haven't seen any probs w/MT owners. Just like everyone else said, you are in the south and will have waaaaay less problems than snow belt owners. My car was bought and used in GA and sold to me in TN.

How does that happen? My family lives up north (PA and NY) and they have several vehicles with over 150k, and those vehicle dont have more problems than any other car would.

I just bought my 2002 Nissan Maxima Se 6-speed from carvision.com, it had 69,000. I paid $13,9000. Runs great, chirps tires till 3rd. No problems. I'd get it, but that's alot of money for a 03 with 69,000 miles. Check carvision.com, they always get 02-03 6-speeds.

I guess they are lucky. It is a known fact that consistent cold conditions are harder on your car, body and home. Some cars do very well and some don't. I'm from Buffalo so I know first hand.

Yes that is high mileage. Aren't warranties based on 12,000 miles per year? I'm from the other extreme as I have a 95 SE with 57,500 mostly highway miles on it. I have owned it for almost 10.5 years.

I just put mine on ebay if you want to take a look. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...e=STRK:MESE:IT

I listed it in the Trader for 15,900 but know I highballed. Not very many hits... We'll see how ebay works out!

it has just under 60k but it's a Nissan!! I had a 95 240 that I put 100k on and never had to anything other than regular maintenance!

The price is high but like everyone is saying, it should last you a while. You'll want to look out for the common problems. The only biggie I have seen while on the org is the MAF going out on certain 03's and the clutch going kaput on a few. There are other lower budget problems, of course, such as the rotors and misc. rattles but that comes with almost any car these days.

I'd say if you can get them down in the high 13s to mid 14s with some kind of extended warranty, you'll be doing well, especially if it does have the Meridian package, TE package, etc. Remember, 6-speeds carry a premium, no matter what the book says, they are most likely going to cost more than an auto. This is simply because of supply and demand. If the auctions aren't producing any 6-speeds and people are wanting them, then the dealers will charge more for them.

And an easy check for HLSD is the pedals. If it has standard rubber topped pedals, then it is almost guaranteed to be a non-HLSD car. If it has the AE looking pedals, it is probably an HLSD car but check under the hood to be sure. (You can do a search on google for the exact code to look for).

Hope that helps and good luck!
