HVAC fan resistor?
HVAC fan resistor?
I apologize in advance if this has been asked and answered before. I would like to know the location of the HVAC fan resistor, the one that controls blower speed, on a 1984 Maxima wagon. I could live with it being out during the winter months but as summer is approaching I'm going to need some fan speeds other than full blast.
As an aside, my Subaru caught fire a few weeks ago and Maxine is my daily driver now. I NEED to row my own gears though and want to convert it to a manual. How rare are five speeds in the rear wheel drive versions of these critters? My main concern is the pedal assembly. Will pedals from another model work in the Maxima?
Thanks in advance for your time.

climb in to the passengers side of your maxima, stick your head under the dashboard and glove box, and look up. you should see it. it will most likely be mounted inside the actual fan housing so that the airflow keeps the resistors from getting too hot. there will be a 4-wire connector for it. disconnect that, then there should be 2 screws holding it in.
if it's not in there, it'll most likely be under the hood.

Found and fixed it. The problem was really wierd though. When I pulled the resistor assembly out and had a look, I could see it immediately. One of the pins on the plug leads to a little springy coppery thing that used to be soldered to another one of the pins. Apparently the solder got hot enough to melt and caused the springy thing to release from its normal location. I'm guessing this is some kind of safety "fuse" type thing? Anyhoo, I bent it back behind the soldered post, for testing porpoises, and tried it out. Worked fine. I then took it out and soldered it back where it belonged and reinstalled it all.
Oh by the way, the resistor block is located behind the glove box and two vent pipes screwed to the main assembly of the HVAC unit. It can probably be reached without removing the GB, but it is much easier with that out of the way.
