Need HO Alternator

Need HO Alternator

Looking to replace the stock alt in my 92 Max.

I believe stock is.. what 90 amps? something like that.

Just looking for suggestions for where to get a good one. And amperage?
I will probably need between 250 and 300 amps. Any suggestions?

I was on the phone this morning with a rep and this company makes them as direct bolt on replacement for our cars (89-94 max) kicking out 160 amps. They said the couldnt sell it except through a car audio dealer, and 1 online guy @ www.splmax.com . Anyway the model # for the dohc is 13477-160 for the 160 amp alternator. how much wattage do you plan to run your sound system?? form what i understand there is no real "upgrade" for more amps for our cars, or atleast thats what i was told when my alternator died and i wanted a higher amp one. i dont know any place that make that high of an amp for any car. if you have a/c you could get gid of that and run a re clocked alternator in its place. but otherwise id say capisitors ot dual battery setup.

i had an alternator shop build one up for me. mine's rated at 120a which is just fine for my rather large stereo.
why would you need 250 - 300 amps. that's absurd!

Im thinking a 200 amp should be fine but I can never know, im not very good at math. My SS will put OUT at or about 4000 watts. So i dont know what that translates to in amps.. and yes i will have a capacitor system back there too. I AM considering a dual battery setup. But then would a 200 amp be ok? or should i go with a custom 300?

If you buy a HO alternator you will not need a capacitor. The 160amp would be plenty for most.

I have a 210 amp alternator (not in the car right now), bought it from Stage Auto Electric out of Pompanamo FL (the owners name is Chris Stage).And yes If you have a high current stereo then you will need a cap, especially if you want to compete. I can vouch for their stuff (if the company is still around), I had another 210 amp alt for my last car, at engine IDLE the alt was putting out OVER 200 ampeare (using a clamp-on ammeter) understand that that's the alts output NOT the combined output of the batt+ALT, meaning its way higher. Most amplifiers in cars today don't put out anywhere near what they're rated, either wired poorly or their electrical system doesn't put out enough.

Make sure you use atleast 1 guage wire, otherwise you'll light up the stock wiring like a christmas tree Ebay is a great source for power wire.

Yea my electrical is pretty much crap. But i WAS considering obtaining an older model Phoenix Gold power distribution center, the 10 or 20 farad model. Just to complete the rear portion of my power needs. Spose I will just go with 1 yellowtop and a 200 amp alt.
Stage Auto Electric hmm? reliability? reviews? complaints?

I MAY upgrade my system later, And more power would be needed if thats the case. I will keep my stock alt, and put it in if i end up selling the car, but ill still have the overkill alternator.

I will run dual I/0 to the rear, which is why Id like the power distribution center, Otherwise, Id have to have huge fused distro blocks. Id rather use the PG unit.

If you get a higher amp alt u dont have to upgrade the wiring. I asked and it was not recommended. 4 gauge is fine for most app's. You need some resistance in your wires or else the somethin will somethin,somethin the guy said!! I forgot those details.

Smack that guy the next time you see him (tell him Eric says hello). I would use a high Tc superconductor for my power wire if they were available for this app.

I got a special deal (I was competing at the time and getting 1st place in the NE), they went for around $400 at the time. A friend picked up a HO alt on ebay for his Navi, It was around $150 for 160amp.

they are pretty expensive, but I have to say they are under rated!


In the NE the competition circuit is dead, ever since 911, at least for the NYC tri-state area.
