help with drive axle replacement

I have a1988 Maxima with a torpedoed CV joint on the left side. I have the new part waiting for install, but I cannot get the old shaft out of the tranny. The book says to simply pry it out with a pry bar located on the CV housing and the tranny case. I've tried, but it won't budge. Is this even humanly possible? Is there a bolt or something in the case that the book overlooked? The right side says to remove the three bolts on the housing, but there is no mention of such on the left? Has anyone done this and can it be done without superhuman strength?

Thanks!

P.S. It's an automatic.

No, it just slides right in...It is a tight fit, though, and will require some force to get it out...when I did mine, since the out joints were already fragged out, I just had my ex-marine buddy who can bench press a VW bus pull it out for me...

Good luck getting it out...it'll go in a little hard, also...you can LIGHTLY tap it in with a wood or rubber head mallet, on the end of the shaft...just MAKE SURE you have the shaft and joints STRAIGHT...

Good luck with it...

Thanks

I'll keep trying. My outer joint is also completely fragged. Part of the problem is there is just no room for a pry bar. It just does not want to go past that little lip on the housing. Oh. well!

A pry bar may be too large...try a long, thick, flat-head screw driver...just be careful...

Success!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You're right. It didn't take a pry bar. It took TWO! One underneath the CV housing, the other above it. I was on the bottom, my 14 year-old, 6'3", 185 (OOPS!- 285 lb.) son on the top bar. Once the pressure equalized, it popped off. It wasn't easy, but it did finally come off. The new one slipped right in just like it was made for it. Thanks for your help. Maybe I'll keep the confounded thing after all. It does run really good.

THis is the wrong forum, but I think I know what you are talking about. I have two frouth gens. Are you talking about the round clip? If so you just have to push it in. It feels like it does not want to go but if you line the axle up straight with the hole and then just push on it, it will slide into the tranny. I have changed many axles on fourth gens and this has always been the case. Just push it in as far as it wants to go then once you get it lined up, lean on it pretty good and it will go in.
