Pressure plate question - not engaging when hot

After my car has reached N.O.T. - it seems like the pressure plate will not release the clutch, therefore not letting me get into any gear. It WILL go in while the car is off.

Clutch is an Exedy stage 1 w/ a Fidanza....under 1000miles on both. Slave cylinder is new, clutch master cylinder is working fine. Clutch pressure is fine too...I bled the upper and lower lines properly more than twice, and still no go.

I dont think it's the TO bearing or syncros either...cuz when the car is cool, it's totally fine.

If I drop the tranny to look at the pressure plate, (by that time it will be cool) - will I notice anything?? What other things do I need to check?

I had the same problem a couple years ago. wound up being the TO bearing.
It would work fine when cold, but after about 10 min of driving, it would start having problems going into gear just like you've described....
I've seen the same thing happen recently on a couple other TO bearings in the exedy clutch kit. several 3rd geners are having this problem, and they use the same clutch kit.

Matt, thank you for your info. Do you think a TO bearing can go bad in less than 1500 miles?

Ok -
I changed the TO bearing today... And it STILL will not go into gear. Now Im 99% sure it's the pressure plate that's f*cking up. The output shaft is spinning freely, (when I press the clutch in)

I can NOT crank it while in gear either.
So I gota find a PP, drop the tranny AGAIN.....take the *******ed clutch off, put a new PP on there, bolt it up, bolt up the tranny.....and pray to God it will work.

:mercy:

maybe when the pressure plate gets hot the figers wont give. either that or the disc is wrong or machined to thick. thats pretty weird. did you put the disc in the right? i think the springs should be facing the pressure plate and not the flywheel. maybe something is wrong w/ the linkage. push the clutch in and have someone watch the slavecylinder to see if its moving the linkage. i dont know what else to tell you bro.

I dunno - when the car gets hot the linkages including the PP, T/O bearing, rods, etc shouldn't behave differently. I suspect the clutch hydraulics are having trouble when engine bay heat has them warmed. Maybe you can get the car good and hot and have someone look to see if the linkages are moving all the way.

Either way, rebuilt master and slaves shouldn't empty your wallet too much. [edit:] sorry, I just re-read and you said your hydraulics should be like new.

[Edit 2]
Another thought: if you replace the clutch master without replacing the clutch slave, it isn't uncommon for the slave to fail. Many mechanics recommend replacing/rebuilding all components of the hydraulic circuit at the same time.

I think it does have something to do w/ the PP fingers. They look fine, but I dunno.....the output shaft just keeps spinning when I press the clutch in.
YEa the slave moves the PP about 1"...I know it's working

I have an old stock PP living in a box about an hour north of Marietta if you want to try it before you go out and buy a new one.
