Do you want a performance clutch? Or just an OEM replacement? The stock OEM nissan clutch is a great choice. Just stay away from those key value parts. They are lower in quality.

What are your symptoms? One quick way to test your clutch is to try and move the car in 3rd or 4th gear while the car is not moving. If its too hard to get moving and/or it stalls, then your clutch still has some life left.

performance clutch would be cool. this is i got 160k on my car and have never changed the clutch. sympstoms are stalling, when i lift the clutch at the point that its supposed to grab it gets really shaky and then stalls, and when it does get into first smooth it sometimes will jerk.

Can you explain the circumstances surrounding your stalling problem? I'm finding it hard to blame the clutch for a stalling engine.

Well, based on how you're describing it, I'd just say you can't find the catch-point. It does change over time, as the disk wears down, but I doubt that's the problem.

Does the clutch hold well when it's fully engaged (pedal up)? Does the clutch fully disengage as it should?

Does it slip at all? If you are doing ~50mph in 5th gear and floor it, does your engine race w/o accelerating the car?

yea the engine will race but it seems like the car is going no where and then it feels like it grabs the acceleration and then it will start to go.

Well, that settles it. Your clutch is slipping. Time for a new one

As for your options: Do you drive in traffic a lot? City driving? Mostly highway? Do you have chicken legs?

The ACT clutch is pretty badass, but it's very heavy, and very harsh. I love it, but it's not for everyone (my mother can't even drive my car). All of my friends love it, though.

The only downside with the ACT is when you sit in traffic. It really kills your leg. Not a problem for me, as I am never in traffic.

I'd probably go with a 5th gen clutch then.

How accurate is this? I did it yesterday and not only it moved but i could get it going. Bad news? Time to get out of the closet my spec stg2 kit?

And once i have the tranny down how do i know the flywheels needs to be change (since sand its a given) ? I could save my 414 from Stillen.
I have a 02/95 production.

Think of your flywheel like the rotors on your brakes. Your only allowed a certain spec before you have to get a new one. Usually on flywheels you don't have to worry to much about it. I'm sure your flywheel can handle another clutch. Just be sure to get it milled before placing another clutch on it. You want to make sure all surfaces are nice and even so the clutch mates up nice with it.

So you would suggest not to get a new flywheel?

What are the benefits of going to a 5th Gen clutch and what is the cost differential if any relative to a 4th Gen clutch?

For its kinda late already ... in my closet is sitting a SPEC stage2 with kevlar disc clutch kit. But if i can save the flywheel money and sand it instead of turning to Stillen... why not

i have almost the exact same symptom in first gear that the thread originator has. it feels like first gear just doesn't want to catch, right at the engagement point the car shakes a little but mine almost never stalls. i was thinking the clutch needed to be changed if anyone knows anything else i should look into first i would appreciate the help.

renatonetmail: You should be able to take off in 3rd and even 4th gear. Keep your foot on the brake for the test. What you're looking for is: Can the engine turn (in gear) while the wheels don't. If the clutch is good, you will stall.

As for the 5th gen clutch, I've read that it's a better unit, with a little more clamping power than the 4th gen. Check around here for opinions on different clutches.

If you have the transmission off, you should get the flywheel inspected and, if needed, turned.

The 5th gen clutch kit is cheaper than a 4th gen. Another thing, it bites the clutch pretty da** hard. I just replaced mine today. First clutch I have ever replaced. It's pretty sweet.
