Ive seen a lot of painted valve cover pics lately and was wanting to paint mine. Did you guys that did it take your valve cover off and paint it or just tape it off and paint it in the engine? I talked to someone that said they just left it on with no problems and Ive heard a lot of people that have said to take it off and paint it. Which one is it? And how do you take it off? Any other tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

You should probably take it off to paint it. There are 3 or 4 screws that come out with an allen key. My question to anybody else is how can i make my NISSAN lettering a different color than the rest of the cover?

painting valve cover

you definately need to take it off to paint it. And also, mask off the areas that you don't want painted. I used a high temp paint, the same i used on my brake calipers. I dont know if it was necessary, but thats the only paint I had and I figured it would work well because It gets pretty hot under there.

You could have used paint thinner and a Q-tip to clean off the top of the letters while the paint was still wet, but that is easier said than done.

If you want your lettering a different color...

Some have said before to put something like Vaseline jelly on the lettering, to mask it.
Now say you want to paint the letters in oh...white, and the rest of the cover in red. Take the cover off(duh), and paint the letters white. Don't worry about overspray. After the paint dries, use the Vaseline jelly to fill in the letters and mask them. Then you paint the rest of the cover red. Scoop out the Vaseline masking, and you're done!

I just used masking tape...

and an exacto knife to cover the "NISSAN" letters, and it worked beautifully.
