trunk lip spoiler owners >> having trouble mounting my trunk lip spoiler

so i bought a lip spoiler off ebay a couple months back, and now that it's finally warm out, I decided to put it on. The trouble is the groove for the tape to be applied to on the spoiler side is deeper than the tape itself. So the tape won't even touch the trunk. I'm thinking that I'll sand down the edges so the tape will stick out away from the spoiler and be able to touch the trunk when I put it on.

I was on the impression that tape would stick better to smooth surfaces over rough surfaces ( more surface area for tape to stick to ) am i wrong on this? I sanded down the groove for the tape to stick on the spoiler with 800 grit (no not enough to make it deeper). The tape still doesn't seem to want to stick on well.

Any trunk lip spoiler owners out there with tips/tricks? thanks in advance.

get thicker tape, unless they already sent you the foamy type(1/8" thick or so). use 36 grit to get it down if you still need to sand it down, then smooth that out progressively with 80-180-320-600, until the scratches are gone.the tape should stick to either shiny or not, so long as it's clean, maybe you still have mold release stuff on the spolier. you can always go to a autobody supply store and buy an adhesion promoter, but it's about 10-15 bucks a can. btw, who did you buy it from and what quality is it? got pics?

bought it from seller "sabersport" Quality is not all that great. It was about $42 shipped. Saved a bit from the paradox one, but I'm sure the quality is a bit better from paradox. The plastic is a bit hard, still sanding it down. finish is almost exactly black and shiny. I'll paint it later on if i feel like it. Once i get it on, and get my 5spokes in the mail, i'll definitely post pictures.

Put 2 layers of tape down. Make sure you use 3M tape and prep the surface correctly, there can't be any wax on the surface.

If you want to paint it, You really should do it before you install it. Once it's on, it will be a real pain to remove it.

tried two layers today and it floated a little bit off the trunk. let it sit for an hour and poured water all underneath and over. came right off so far i've spent 20 bucks on 3m tape.

Prep-wise I've wetsanded down the area on the trunk with 800 and 1500. First time wetsanding, and i'm hoping polish and wax will blend it all together. i have a strip of white on my trunk. I'm going to take the sanding approach tomorrow morning after my nightshift and see how that works out.

Come to the shop and let me or my brother stick it on for you.

You'll need to compound 1500 sand scratches out with a machine.

You don't need to sand the area, just use a grease and wax remover. 3M tape will stick to a smooth surface better.

To correct what you've done so far, you'll need to compound and polish that area back up to a nice shine. Don't wax it!! Make sure the area on your lip is wax and grease free as well, clean it good. The surface should be smooth, not scratched up. Then put 2 layers of tape down and stick the lip onto your trunk. If it's done correctly that lip isn't coming back off anytime soon.
