Trailer HItch?
I had a hitch installed by U-Haul on my old 87 SE 5spd. I towed a 5x8 U-Haul trailer with it, which caused my steering rack to go out. I couldn't have been towing more than 800 pounds at the most...I know the Max is rated at being able to tow 1000 lbs. What is anyone else's experience with this?
I used to tow a 1200 lb trailer with another 600 lbs in it regularly, no problems whatsoever...don't really want to part with the hitch even though its not on the car anymore, I may end up needing it some time, but if I can get ahold of a digital camera in the next few days I'll take a pic of it so you can have an idea of what it should look like..its a Rigid Hitch brand, and bolts to the spare tire well in 2 or 3 places and to a metal bumper support (I think)..
The key to successfully towing a trailer with the max is to NOT run it in OD (auto), and to keep the tongue weight down to a minimum..if the trailer is much over 1500 lbs you should consider using trailer brakes for highway towing

Ya, that's how my old U-Haul hitch bolted to my old Max. My old Max was only rated to tow 1000 lbs, and so is my 3G, so I assumed the two were basically capable of the same things in that regard. I'm skittish about wrecking another steering rack though if I tow with my 3G.
But if you towed 1800+ without bad effects, I guess I shouldn't be too worried.

yeah I pulled my 1200 lb cycle wagon with a riding mower, 1 walk behind mower, 2 gas trimmers, 1 commercial highwheel trimmer, a lawn sweeper and 10 gallons of gas and my toolboxes behind it 4 times a month during the mowing season from june 2001-sept 03..I just kept the tongue weight around 150 lbs. The maximum towing weight is generally based on whether or not you plan on using trailer brakes, but if you don't distribute the weight in the trailer properly, it will put even more stress on the rest of the car.
my cycle wagon was a single axle, 7.5 ft of headroom inside the trailer, 10 ft front wall to back door with the axle set in the center, with a 4 ft tongue. keep the light stuff (trimmers and sweeper) to the front, rider right over the axle, highwheel trimmer and walk behind mower to the back shifted in sideways..it generally took me about 35 minutes to get everything situated in the trailer.
